CBS Green Lights Brannon Braga and David Goyer's New Sci-Fi Series THRESHOLD

Features

By GustavoLeao / 04:26, 17 May 2005 / General Genre/SciFi

According to Variety, CBS is giving the series green light to the new science-fiction series THRESHOLD, executive produced by former STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Brannon Braga and BLADE: TRINITY director David S. Goyer. Braga co-wrote the script for the pilot.

The series, which stars TNG actor Brent Spiner and Carla Gugino, focuses on a team of scientists and military personnel who make contact with alien lifeforms.

According to the Trade, Braga has inked an extension to his contract keeping him at Paramount Network Television through 2007 should THRESHOLD became a series.

The news comes ahead of CBS' official announce of its fall schedule this week at the network Up Front presentations in New York. The Viacom-owned network is expected to add several genre-based shows on the heels of ABC's LOST success. Reuters.

If (and that's a mighty big 'if') Threshold survives the initial order from CBS and they bring it back for a 2nd season, expect Rick Berman to join the crew as executive producer.

I can't wait for THRESHOLD | Report this post to moderator

Ok, Threshold is easily my most anticipated new show of next season. Why? Three words: David, S, and Goyer. That mad is very talented. Dark City. The Blade Trilogy. Justice Society. I can't wait.

So many of this kind of genre show next season! | Report this post to moderator
By: who1 (Odo's file, contact) @ 00:20:42 on May 18, 2005

There's that NBC one about sea creatures, and ABC's one or two about paranormal stories, and now this is going to be on CBS? I am sure some of these will be fine, but the flood of failed 'Friends' ripoffs, 'Apprentice' hand-me-downs, procedural crime shows and now female-centric shows (did we really need 'Desperate Housewives' to make that happen?) and shows with sci-fi underpinnings... it all makes me annoyed at how unadventurous the networks are. Shows that are truly new and original like 'Ally McBeal,' 'Seinfeld,' 'Arrested Development,' 'The Office,' 'Futurama...' they deserve to be nurtured and promoted for what they are - breaths of fresh air, not repackaged servings of proven and narrow genres.

Well i for one will give the show a shot, cause i like both brent spiner and Carla Gugino.
i was so disapointed when abc canceled karen sisco after a few episodes so it will be good to see Carla Gugino back on the screen again.
what ever your feelings are for braga, keep in mind its also being developed by david goyer who wrote the new batman film which by the way is better than the last 3 batman movies combined.
cant wait to see it again after it opens.

I will absolutely give it a shot, but if it's not being given a head start in August or very early September, I suspect it will not find an audience, especially when other sci-fi shows on the other nets start to prmiere.

I guess the part of "or something like that" was completely lost on you. Why am I not surprised!

It is funny how I am the only one you are bugging about ripping Threshold. Get off your high horse little man!

Oh man, I don't know about this. Alias does well in the ratings based on the fact that it has Lost as a lead-in. I'm worried that next season there won't be enough people finding it on its own night. It'll lose the ratings battle to CSI guaranteed, but it'll probably either beat or just come in close to losing to NBC's Will & Grance and Joey sitcoms. Right now Alias comes in 2nd or 3rd for the night, so I guess ABC is hoping it continues that on Thursdays. We'll see but they better advertise it. ABC is usually pretty good with that stuff, unlike UPN was with Enterprise.

Considering Lost has been a huge hit this year for ABC, CBS is looking for something to compete with it. What'll be funny is if they put in on Wednesday nights in direct competition with Lost (or Alias if they put it on at 9pm). It'll get destroyed and be cancelled after 6 or 7 episodes. Also, if CBS thinks Brannon Braga can come up with the same level of storytelling as JJ Abrams has with Lost and Alias, boy are they in for a shock. Should we start a pool to see how many episodes actually air before CBS pulls it from their schedule?

I'm also shocked. Whereas it's conceivable for the creator of a single failed-series to get a second chance, why would CBS greenlight something by a man who actually evokes negative sentiment in the target audience?

    From Zap2It:

ABC has shaken up its schedule from top to bottom for next season.

On Wednesday, ABC is moving the desert island smash "Lost" down to 9 p.m. time slot. "Lost" will take the middle of the night, providing a compatible lead-in of "Invasion," an alien-based drama that ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson describes simply as "spectacular."

For the third year in a row, "Alias" finds itself in a new home, joining the tight battle on Thursday night at 8 p.m. The action show, which will have to deal with star Jennifer Garner's reported pregnancy, will set up "The Night Stalker," an update of the 1970s supernatural series, which had a strong cult fanbase.

And William Shatner's "Boston Legal" is moving to Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

I guess CBS is so desparate to fill in their fall line up that they will take any crap that is on the table. I mean how smart is CBS for hiring a guy who drove a huge franchise into the ground? Lets start a series at 11-13 million viewers and after only 2 season of horrible writting bring that down to 3 million.

Braga is a talented writer. I know that because of his work on Next Generation which was great. His work on Voyager and Enterprise was weak, to be sure but he inherited Voyager from Jeri Taylor and you know what they say...you can't polish a turd. Voyager was better under Braga then under Taylor but that show was crap from day one.

This will be his first work outsode of Trek and that should be like a shot of creativity in the arm for him.

The real season to watch Threshold will be David S Goyer. That guy in unquestionably talented. I can't wait to see this show. Goyer + Spiner = must Tivo.

"I believe the movie was called "Sphere" or something like that..."

"Sphere" was about a team of scientists that encounter a sphere that reaches into their thoughts and turns those thoughts into reality.

Did you even see the movie that you're basing your derision upon? Did you read the book that the movie was based on? For that matter, are you even AWARE that it was based on a book?

If you're going to rip into "Threshold", at least do it right.

"Serenity" is the movie "Star Wars" prequels wish they could be.

Braga is just a bit player in the THRESHOLD production team, it's not his series. It may actually generate decent numbers. I don't say this because I like Braga, you know I hate him. But the reality is, he has competent help on this one. If it succeeds, it will be in spite of his presence there on the set.

If THRESHOLD doesn't do well, expect to see it imported over to UPN, probably in ENT's old timeslot. UPN has become a cesspool of television programming. This is where the garbage goes, and truth be told, any STAR TREK production does not belong there. It would do better on a real network, at least it can live or die by realistic television constraints instead of the artificial one that allowed VOYAGER to continue for seven seasons, even though it just kept getting worse.

    Quote:

Nobody could ever accuse Brannon Braga of being an original thinker or a creative innovator.

    Quote:

If he ever has anything to do with Star Trek again, I will promptly build a website which lists the sponsors who should be boycotted. The ONLY thing that will release TREK from the paws of the two Bs will be a financial action against them. Money talks and bullshit walks, and the names Berman and Braga are shorthand for bullshit.

    --------

To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big 'thing.' This is truth, to me.

Hey that's great!! It'll be good to see Spiner again on a weekly basis, plus Brannon can put all his experience in there and do whatever he wants in his own fictional universe... (I also hope he employs the occasional out-of-work Star Trek actor for guest spots!!)

    Checklist:

    Cat suit for Carla Gugino.
    Crank out those time-travel scripts.
Have press release ready suggesting that "Threshold." suffered from series fatigue after four weeks.

NBC has a new show Fridays at 9 next season very similar in idea. Aliens from Venus are found under the sea. They're here laying the ground work for an invasion of Earth.

""Fathom," an action-adventure drama project from writers-directors Josh and Jonas Pate. The network has greenlighted a pilot from the NBC Universal Television show, which is described to be in the vein of James Cameron's "The Abyss" and revolves around mysterious creatures deep in the ocean. The twin brothers penned the pilot script and are set to direct and executive produce the pilot."

I hope both series tank miserably.

ABC also has a new alien invasion show coming, "Invasion".

""Invasion", Shaun Cassidy's Warner Brothers TV-produced hour looks at what happens in a small Florida town after a hurricane. Details are being kept under wraps, but, per the show's title, an alien invasion could be involved, the trade paper reported. Cassidy (American Gothic) wrote the pilot and will executive produce."

That might be kind of cool.

Anyway, with the Lost juggernaut good for at least one more season, and American Idol reigning from Jan to May, CBS, NBC, etc, should really just abandon Wednesday nights. If I were an exec, I'd wait until Lost hits S3 to seriously challenge it. It'll probably be running out of steam by then.
