NY Daily News Likes Creativity of Tonight's "In a Mirror, Darkly" (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 07:31, 22 April 2005 / Enterprise

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE heads toward its last hurrah tonight with the first of a two-part episode titled "In a Mirror, Darkly." Taking place entirely in the Mirror universe made famous in ST:TOS and ST:DS9, the episodes even include an alternate opening credits sequence depicting moments of conquest and war rather than exploration and peace.

"I've seen this two-parter, and consider them the best hours of ENTERPRISE yet," writes David Bianculli. "It doesn't hurt that all the characters, from Scott Bakula's noble Capt. Archer to Linda Park's meek Ensign Hoshi, get to play wildly against type in an all-evil alternate reality. Or that their costumes are a lot more playful, whether the midriff-baring uniforms for the women or the DEEP SPACE NINE-era color-coded pullovers taken from the pilfered ship Defiant."

Bianculli gives the episode 3 1/2 stars and says "The biggest treat of this episode, though, is its ability to surprise - and to do so with not only a sense of TREK history, but with a sense of humor."

"In a Mirror, Darkly, Part One" airs tonight at 8p on UPN. Read the complete review here.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

*** danger **** spoiler **** danger ****

So much shock and awe in this episode. The opening sequence starts with the scene directly out of First Contact when Cochran meets the Vulcans. Then he freaking shoots the Vulcan and one of the humans behind Cochran yells, "Let's steal their ship" I was thinking holy crap! Then the credits begin, but instead of that crappy rock-ballad BS the music is film-quality with scenes of a militaristic, Klingon like Humans show their "victories" in battle after battle! But the one thing that awed me was how much delight Phlox took in torturing and killing his subjects. This coming after the episode "Divergence" where Phlox refuses to help the Klingons create augments or use a viral strain for ethical reasons!

Truly great stuff. I'm soo bummed once Enterprise is off the air because then there will TRULY be nothing worth watching.

*moment of silence for Trek*

cries :'-(

I thought first contact with the Vulcans was going to be when "our" universe and the Mirror universe diverged. But based on the opening credits, it had to at least have been before the moon was reached by humans - based on the space suit and flag planted on the moon in the opening credits.

Perhaps the premise is that the two universes have always been parallel? Actually, I suspect it was just never thought out.

Or perhaps we really are in Worf's TNG Parallels multiverse!

This is the best episode of Trek I've seen in ages. First TREK episode to get 5 stars from IGN in I don't know how long.

Yes, same here. I was scrolling through my tv guide an hour ago and saw another damn ball game on. I don't mind playing baseball; it's a fun game, but it's about as hard to watch on tv as golf. Mind u, I like playing golf too.

Since I have a poker game to go to tonight, I won't be able to download the ep till very late tonight (if I do well at poker), and thusly unable to watch until tomorrow morning.

Oh woe is me, UPN sucks.

"...the DEEP SPACE NINE-era color-coded pullovers taken from the pilfered ship Defiant."

Huh? I take it this writer isn't much of a Trek fan!

He could've easily just called them militaristic jumpsuits. This would play along with the alternate universe where the Imperialistic Federation is a military.

haha Yeah, that's pretty funny. Well, obviously he is not a Trek fanatic, so the fact that he likes it so much is all the more impressive.

At least he mentioned Deep Space Nine, my most beloved of all Trek!

Minus pretty much all the first two seasons except the pilot and the last episode of season 2 - at least for me.

While I can dig up several exceptions that you may or may not agree with, please tell me that you at least forgot about "Duet"!

It was a very good episode. Actually, I know I was overly broad in my writing off pretty much the entire first two seasons. There were several memorable episodes. But really, I think there were far too many ones that missed the mark. The third season seemed to be when DS9 began to hit its stride. Perhaps it takes that long to get the character development set and directed properly, or for the writers to get the focus down.

You know, I've noticed that this is a problem with all of the modern Treks... They never pick up until at least the third year. We're used to it with Trek, but would never excuse the slow start for most shows.
