Colm Meaney on STAR TREK Typecasting and Conventions, Grateful to Rick Berman

Features

By GustavoLeao / 12:27, 27 March 2005 / Deep Space Nine

Tandem News posted an exclusive interview with STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION and DEEP SPACE NINE actor Colm Meaney ('O'Brien'), in which he talks about his new film BOYS AND GIRL FROM THE COUNTY and his work on DS9. Here are a few excerpts :

Question : As a STAR TREK character you're now part of one of the oddest cultural phenomena in history. How is that?

Meaney : It's almost like I'm two different actors. Most people in the business, in the feature film business-directors, producers-they don't even know I did STAR TREK. Which is good, in a way, because the danger in doing something like STAR TREK is that you end up in that pigeonhole and you're doing that the rest of your life. But as to the culture, I avoid those STAR TREK conventions as much as I can. I didn't do them at all when I was doing the show. But I've done about four or five since. Talking about the show reminds you of things that you went through. So it's fun. When the show was on, I couldn't have handled it. I didn't want that direct connection.

Question : Doing STAR TREK for those many years could've ruined your movie career. But it didn't. How did you manage?

Meaney : You have to stand your ground. You don't want to be just playing one character for the rest of your life, and I told that to [producer] Rick Berman. And he said he would always get me out to do a feature I really wanted to do. And for seven years he was true to his word. It was amazing. They'd write me out of a couple of episodes or they'd maybe shoot two days back-to-back-the last day of one episode and the first day of another episode-which would cut me loose for two or three weeks. It was kind of a scheduling nightmare, but it was well worth doing. And I'll always be grateful to Rick for that, because for seven years he really made that work.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen it yet (well, since it doesn't come out until May 13th here in North America there's a good chance most people haven't), Colm Meaney is great in the new movie Layer Cake. The movie is like a cross between Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels and The Usual Suspects. It's smart and stylish ... very cool.

Plus it's a chance to see Matthew Vaughn as a director (he's just signed to be the helmer on XMen 3). Colm Meaney is a major character and a real hard-ass. Great movie.

I saw Layer Cake last year and agree that it is superb. It also stars Tom Hardy. Looks a little different obviously, but close your eyes and you'll recognise his voice immediately.

I also happen to believe that it is far superiour to Lock Stock.
