Production Report for "In a Mirror, Darkly" - Spoilers for Conclusion to TOS Homage

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 19:16, 8 February 2005 / Enterprise

Despite cancellation, the show must go on. At least for the remaining episodes of the season. "In a Mirror, Darkly" wrapped this week, bringing an end to a two-episode shoot involving replicas of sets from the original STAR TREK and a story that even calls for the ENTERPRISE crew to don 60's style Starfleet tunics.

"But the production took on even more of a classic flavor in the form of costumes and props," writes the official web site. "In the story [final spoiler warning!!], most of the principal characters have beamed over to the Defiant in EV (extra-vehicular or environmental) suits. Subsequently the Tholians use their web-making capabilities to destroy the mirror NX-01. That leaves Archer, T'Pol, Tucker, Reed and Mayweather on the other ship in their grey EV undersuits. So once they take up residence, they go through the original crew's wardrobe and don their uniforms."

According to the report, Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, and Anthony Montgomery will wear the classic red shirts; Scott Bakula got a green wrap-around; Jolene Blalock a short blue miniskirt; and Linda Park a revealing Mirror Universe "captain's woman" costume.

In addition, props from TOS made an appearance and a U.S.S. Defiant insignia patch - never shown in "The Tholian Web" - was created. Tholians and a Gorn will populate the episode, rendered in post-production, and the Defiant herself will get a CG makeover.

"The visual effects team will have their hands full with this episode, though it should be an enjoyable challenge. Foremost, they will be rendering the exterior of the Constitution-class starship. Plans call for the Defiant to look slightly newer than Kirk's Enterprise, with more detail such as intricate hull plating patterns. We will also see the Tholians create their famous web."

"In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 2" was directed by Marvin Rush from a Mike Sussman script. It will air April 22nd. Read more details about the unique production here.

Gorn CGI? | Report this post to moderator

Aww c'mon, don't tell me they don't have the old lizard suit sitting around somewhere. I always thought it looked rather convincing, a cgi Gorn might not. Time will tell. Can't wait to see what the full Tholian looks like. Always thought it sucked they never showed on DS9.

I think it sounds like harmless fun. Tholians, Gorn, TOS homages... it can't -not- be a good time! It's smart to have the director of photography helming one of the episodes as well (Jonathan West directed 'Trials and Tribbleations') - matching the look of the sets to TOS requires great technical skill.

From where does Hoshi get the Captain's Woman uniform? Isn't this Defiant from OUR universe, so shouldn't all the feminine uniforms be the Uhura/Chapel miniskirt kind?

    SPOILERS

    ....

    ...

hoshi and phlox get to defiant in escape pods, so they are already wearing what they have on.

enterprise nx-01 gets destroyed so those there in EV suits are stranded without uniforms and borrow from the defiant's wardrobe.

Right, so instead of having an actual reason to have the current crew in the old uniforms like what they did on DS9, they just go and find clothing to change into, for absolutely no reason, right in the middle of a crisis (being in an alternate universe to your own).

Not only that, but the two women, one of which is a Vulcan, decide that the best things for them to wear are revealing outfits. Yeah, great storytelling there.

Don't be an idiot. The point is that people like me, who like the Original Series, will get a big kick out of seeing it.

If you don't like it, don't watch. Don't piss in our cereal.

1: Not a crossover. It is a two parter set entirely wthin the mirror universe. Archer and Co will not encounter the normal Trek universe counterparts at all aside from a mention of them in the Defiant's database.

2: They get to the ship in escape pods (NX-01 was destroyed) and as such only have their own clothing which is quite possibly torn and tattered. And just grab some crap from the crw wardrabe's I guess.

3: Stop bitching. We get to see T'Pol in a short skirt and Hoshi in lingerie.

4: It's the mirror universe, buddy. Anything goes in the mirror universe. And I am so freaking glad at least one Vulcan or character is gonna have a goatee... it's tradition.

Just stop trying to find logic in the ep and enjoy it for what it is. A fun romp and throw-back to an old friend... the mirror universe.

Not to mention: I didn't hear anyone bitching when TOS was on the air and the women were wearing their short skirted uniforms.

But now when T'Pol does it, as per STARFLEET regulation in the future, somebody has to bitch.

      Get a life.

Anything goes in the mirror universe, IT IS NOT CANON... THEY CAN DO ANYTHING... Also, who says that the women cannot alter the clothing to their satisfaction???

As I was posting, the one thing I was thinking was if the actual crew is from the mirror universe as well then it's at least partially explainable, since they'll be characatures anyway.

Obviously that's the case, so I don't care so much now.. I would perhaps wonder what the point is of following the mirror universe crew for 2 episodes (seems almost as pointless as just having a reset button at the end) but I'll leave that one be.

Because it's fun!!! Sheesh... don't you get it? This is one of the coolest ideas that TPTB have come up with... I didn't think anybody would have a problem with this premise.

            The point is simple.

            Because they can.
