Spoilers Galore in Second Production Report for "In a Mirror, Darkly" - Terrans, Tholians, Agony, Oh My

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 07:37, 1 February 2005 / Enterprise

The official STAR TREK web site has published a second production report for "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 1". The site reveals numerous details about the episode, slated to air April 15th, including the fact that the entire two-part adventure will take place in the Mirror universe. As TrekWeb reported several weeks ago, the episode opens with an alternate version of first contact with the Vulcans depicted in FIRST CONTACT.

From there, the script calls for an alternate opening title sequence: "...a revised title sequence with images of exploration replaced by images of violence, and 'Faith of the Heart' replaced with a militaristic 'drums of war' march, culminating triumphantly with the Terran Empire symbol. (This is what [Mike] Sussman's script calls for; the title sequence has yet to be produced, so things could change before the show airs.)"

By now you know that a large portion of the episodes will take place onboard the recreated sets of the U.S.S. Defiant, lost in the TOS episode "The Tholian Web." According to the report, this is the most complete replica constructed since shooting ended on the original series.

"This is the third time the TOS bridge has been depicted in a post-TOS show, but this is the first time it has been reproduced this completely, with a full three-quarter-round set. In 'Relics' (ST:TNG) only about half of the full bridge set was built and shown on screen. In 'Trials and Tribble-ations' (DS9) only small segments were used as background for the contemporary characters, the rest of the Enterprise bridge seen in repurposed TOS clips (though corridors and other sets were fully reproduced). This new set starts with the science station at the far left and goes all the way around to the viewscreen, with the captain's chair and the helm in the center."

The episode will include numerous homages to the TOS Mirror universe, including female uniforms with bare midriffs, daggars on the hip of every crewman, and the familiar Terran Empire insignia of Earth with a sword through it. We'll also see dead 23rd century crewman littered throughout the Defiant when she's first captured by Mirror 'Archer' and his crew.

'Doctor Phlox' will dissect living animals in this universe, and 'Major Reed' will be instrumental in developing the famous "Agony Booth" (no Imperial ship is complete without one) seen in "Mirror, Mirror." But wait, as they say, there's more. We've only ever gotten a brief, distorted glimpse at the Tholians, in the aforementioned "Tholian Web." ENTERPRISE will create using computer graphics a living, breathing Tholian, the first to be seen up close and personal in all of STAR TREK.

"In a Mirror, Darkly" will air April 15 and 22nd, respectively. Written by Mike Sussman, James Conway ("Broken Bow", "Damage") directed part one.

I can't wait to see this one. Of course, the UPN station here in NYC will probably interrupt the episode to give a useless weather update like they did last weekend.

TOS - re-created sets | Report this post to moderator
By: Capricorn Two (Odo's file, contact) @ 14:48:21 on Feb 01, 2005

While they have these re-created sets of the 'Constitution-class' starship up and in-place -- I hope someone at Paramount / ENT production staff invites the TOS actors to visit the soundstage and pose for pictures -- or video tape their visit, get their impressions, etc. -- something for the DVD featurettes.

Agree. They shoud invite Shatner, Nimoy, Takei, Nichols, Koenig and Majel Roddenberry to tour the sets and Entertainment Tonight could do a featurette on that to promote the show. That would be really cool.

I posted a couple of weeks back on what was going to happen to the USS-Defiant NCC-1764's dead crew. I was curious if they had forgotten about them or written them out...well, at least someone read my post!

Not to quash your sense of self-importance, but all the writing staff would have had to do is watch The Tholian Web to be aware of the fact that the Defiant had dead crewmembers aboard. And given that Manny Coto and others are well-versed in TOS lore, they could have, indeed should have, been able to figure it out on their own.

Really, I think many people here overestimate the impact of posting ideas at Trekweb. It's as if writers who were raised on TOS couldn't succeed without the assistance of fan boys. Sheesh!

One, I wasn't sitting here bragging about Coto & Co reading my post on Trekweb. If you want my personal opinion, there about a 1000 POPULAR Trek sites on the net (no offense Stevo), to sit here and think that they personaly paruse Trekweb is a bit ego-inflating...

Two, I was making a joke to the factor that only one other person had replied to my post, it was a humorous jab to the fact that my post was lost in the wave of multiple multiple multiple posts...

So you made an assumption to the connotation of what my post was about....

Noted. Still, you have to admit that given the fact that so many posters seem so deadly serious about everything, it was easy for me to draw that sort of conclusion.

Oh agreed, but in all seriousness some people have some problems...I remeber reading some posts on TrekBBS and Trekweb on how people were actually upset over their ideas appearing on the upcoming episodes....as though Paramount actually hunted down these ideas off the net and that they're out millions...yeesh!

I can't wait!!!

I can just imagine Sussman pitching the idea a year ago:

SUSSMAN: I want to do a mirror universe story with the original USS Defiant.

BERMAN: We already did that story on DS9.

SUSSMAN: You don't understand. The ORIGINAL USS Defiant, the first.

BERMAN: She got destroyed toward the end of Season 7.

SUSSMAN: I'm talking about the origins of the mirror universe, which was first seen...

BRAGA: Yeah first seen in DS9, I saw that episode.

SUSSMAN: No, the original series!

BRAGA: Oh!

BERMAN: Ah!

SUSSMAN: So what do you think?

BERMAN: It's a great idea, but we really don't have time. We'll get back to you...

SUSSMAN LEAVES THE ROOM.

BERMAN: It will never happen.

BRAGA: Never happen!

Damn. That's just....damn. I mean...wow. Damn.

This could be the coolest two-parter in the entire history of Star Trek. Hoshi as the Captain's Woman? Cool! Archer stages a mutiny? Cool! The Defiant? Cool!

Hell, I may even record this one.

The only bad news here is that we have to wait until mid April for this.

If they really go all out and change the opening theme as described, it'll turn heads...

Sussman, I saw you lurking around on here... make 'em do it!

April can't get here soon enough. This sounds like it's just going to rock. I'm especially thrilled about seeing the reproduced TOS sets.
