Production Report for "In a Mirror, Darkly" Reveals Sussman-Penned Trip Down Memory Lane (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 16:56, 27 January 2005 / Enterprise

The official STAR TREK web site has published its production report for the first part of a two-episode Mirror universe adventure titled "In a Mirror, Darkly." As reported here previously, the episode will involve substantial photography on replica sets from ST:TOS belonging to the U.S.S. Defiant, lost in the classic episode "The Tholian Web."

The site calls it, "a script that revisits the mirror universe but focuses on the power struggles of Captain Forrest and Commander Archer and the discovery of a rather special starship. This story is the brainchild of writer Mike Sussman, who wrote both teleplays, along with executive producer Manny Coto, who wrote the story for 'Part II.' According to Sussman, the episode is "a prequel to 'Mirror, Mirror' and a sequel to 'The Tholian Web,' two of my favorite episodes."

Sussman tells the site he pitched the story several years ago and the epic scope of the idea fit well into season four's strategy of mini-arcs. The site further reveals, "The beauty of mirror universe characters, of course, are the subtle nods to their real-universe characters. Archer, as second in command, is given carte blanche to plot his way into command of the ship (remember 'Mirror, Mirror') not to mention regaining the woman (Hoshi) who's loyalty changes, depending on whomever is in command."

The entire production staff was tasked with recreating the Constitution Class 1960s style sets, which are the most extensive used since filming wrapped on the last TOS episode "Turnabout Intruder." Sussman tells StarTrek.com fans will be impressed:

"I think the bridge set is remarkable. I hope fans will be thrilled to see that set again in all of its glory. I feel that it probably looks better than the original in many respects, if you compare them side by side."

Read much more about the proudction of part one, directed by James Conway and expected to air April 15th, here.

Hey Steve, if you posted this you need to know that this is NOT THE PRODUCTION REPORT, it's, as the title said, the "Production Sneak Peek"

Just to make something clear.

I'm pretty sure the real report is coming up soon.

I worship the entire Mirror Universe-saga. This story line has always been great. I was not too thrilled about the Terran Rebellion nor the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. But I loved the factor of a dark Empire that is a reflection of the Federation.

To bring out the absolute WORST in a person is just great story telling.

I really hope they play up the power of the Constitution-class compared to the Nx-class, I want Commander Archer to fire on NX-class ships and the ships not even survive the first strike, I want that Defiant to be seen as a warship and not the actual peaceful intentions it was set up to be...

EXCELLENT!

Does this mean Hoshi's the Marlena Moreau of "In A Mirror, Darkly"?

At least it means more screen time for her. I'd be willing to bet that Hoshi's got more screentime since "Countdown" than she got in all of S1-2 and the first half of season 3.

With Reed's role in the Babel arc, Mayweather's involvement in the "Demons" plot, and Hoshi's status in "Mirror" - they're doing pretty good to bring these three up the ladder of development.

I liked this idea 2 years ago when Sussman mentioned it, and it still seems pretty good. The key here is that the entire episode takes place in the mirror universe. That's the only way to avoid continuity issues.

What's also interesting would be that this sounds like a true sequel. I didn't like what DS9 did to the mirror universe. The Shatnerverse books certainly rehabilitated that, but I wasn't a fan of what DS9 did.

    This however looks more interesting.
