More Details on Special Set Construction for "In a Mirror, Darkly" Episodes (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 17:52, 23 January 2005 / Enterprise

As TrekWeb first reported last week, "In a Mirror, Darkly" will establish that the U.S.S. Defiant from the ST:TOS episode "The Tholian Web" arrived in the Mirror Universe when it disappeared in that classic episode, where in this deuce of new episodes, alternate versions of 'Jonathan Archer' and his comrades will capture its 23rd century technology and use the advantage to stage a coup against the 22nd century's Imperial Starfleet.

The Defiant was a Constitution Class starship, the same as the original U.S.S. Enterprise, and many scenes take place on the ship in this series of episodes. This means the ENTERPRISE production team will have to recreate in part the sets of the 1960s television show. Partial replicas were previously constructed for TNG's "Relics" featuring James Doohan, as well as DS9's 30th Anniversary tribute episode "Trials and Tribble-ations."

According to SaveEnterprise.com, the list of sets to be seen in the upcoming "Mirror" episodes includes The Bridge (from the Science station clockwise to Main Viewscreen), the Briefing Room with tabletop tri-screen, Rec Room, Crew Quarters, Corridors, Jefferies Tubes and the Turbolift.

Along with the interiors, the script calls for battle scenes between 22nd century-era ships and the Defiant, suggesting we'll see a CGI version of the classic design in the episode. "Trials and Tribble-ations" also utilized a CGI model of the Constitution Class U.S.S. Enterprise.

That's all cool.

My only worry is that they make the mirror universe characters camp and not genuinely threatening. Mirror Sulu was scarey, I mean you can have nightmares about him with that scar and the sword.

The mirror Sisko was a cool hard character, and Odo was a bastard for all the right reasons.

Certain characters, like mirror Worf and mirror Kira came across as a bit too camp and just the actors having fun rather than being serious characters. To an extent the Voyager episode with the revised planet history was very camp too: Janeway with black gloves etc.

I hope for some decent performances and genuinely opposite and real characters for this two-parter. If I see camp, or bi-sexual characters dressed in leather that will make love to anything, I'll cringe. Give us some bad ass Enterprise counterparts. This is not the Trek universe so you can take all the risks in the world, so long as they don't have whips on them ;)

Does anyone remember in the TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror" when Spock made the comment about his death being avenged and those avengers being Vulcan....one wonders perchance if Sulu got that war wound from a battle with Vulcans...

Quite possibly. Didn't Takei recently do a playstation game in which he played Mirror Sulu again. I wonder what they came up with for that.

    [sarcasm mode ON]

Bringing back The Mirror Universe would be the ultimate cry for help for Trek. You think the fact that bringing back the Mirror Universe would do wonders for trek. My ass it would. It would bring ratings up JUST ONCE! Then once all is said and done Trek would be back on a spiral slump to the bottom all over again.

Using the Mirror Universe is a crutch for Star Trek. A one shot appearence of the Mirror Universe in either television or movies would do nothing for the industry except bring in fans BRIEFLY. Then once a new show or episode is back on the screen without The Mirror Universe (which can't have a whole goddamn series revolve around The Mirror Universe) the series or movie will do only half of what the Mirror Universe movie did. People want The Mirror Universe like a crack addict needs drugs. It's only a quick and temporary fix until you need the next line of drugs.

It's a crutch, it's like a fucking Meth addict who needs his next fix. If The Mirror Universe comes back, it'll bring ratings up ONLY ONCE.

Bringing Back The Mirror Universe is the biggest mistake in the world.

You know, I sit back wanting to reply in anger and just basically go off.

Yet, fortunately, common sense kicked in with the realization to the fact that all it would do would have you reply in kind...we'd go back and forth for about five six posts then it would get old....so I'm just going on and say that we went ahead with the five six replies and it got heated then got old...so now I'm going to move on....

Of course, because you're petty. I wouldn't expect any less and every posting you make confirms it.

I notice you couldn't dispute anything I said in regards to gimmicks and your hypocricy. Just like you couldn't dispute the facts that:

            1. The trailer wasn't a proposed storyline.

            2. The trailer's creators didn't want to be "in charge" of Star Trek.

            3. The numbers give solid, undisputable evidence that episodes of Berman Trek that FOLLOW TOS crossover episodes retain ratings. Which you continue to deny because you're desperate.

            4. You like a critically reviled movie and a critically reviled show, and then you expect anyone to listen to you in regards to anything to do with taste.

Just be happy you're getting your attention.

It should be interesting to see if they go for exact replica's of the old 60's style TOS sets, or if they try to modernize them a bit. Either way, it should be good.

STAR TREK, it's good to have you back! | Report this post to moderator
By: Deslok 2 (Odo's file, contact) @ 03:54:48 on Jan 24, 2005

Ever since the first season of ENT, this is the kind of TREK that I have been wanting to see. Lately, it has been surpassing my expectations.

Yes, the first two season of ENT recieved much bashing, I can see that they were attempting to do much of the same things as Manny is trying now, but the first season of ENT lacked flair and a certain element of creativity that I associate with STAR TREK.

There's no denying that ENT truly is now a legitimate heir to the STAR TREK line.

Geekgasm. Thats probably the only word I can think of to describe what we're all feeling about this. If this is Enterprise's last season, Coto sure is making sure it goes out with a bang.

GIVE US A SEASON 5!!!

This is critical, whether there's a season five or not. If ENT can manage not to leave a bad taste in out mouths, it dramatically increases the chances of Trek returning, whether as movies-of-the-week or whatever. Manny Coto is my hero.

The Enterprise as seen in Trials and Tribbleations was a physical model, not CGI as mentioned above.

It was definately a model - I've seen the model, and have friends who work (and worked) on that particular episode. In fact I've seen pictures of them filming the model for DS9. It is amusing that people think it's CGI because "they can tell it is".

It is a model - a physical model. Sorry!

No, it was CGI in "Trails and Tribble-ations" (DS9). One) you can tell its CGI and Two) In one of the featurettes in one of the TNG DVD box sets, a CGI guy said his favorite effect was re-creating the Enterprise for the DS9 episode.

I had always suspected (based on what I had read) that they had created a model, scanned it in, and used the computer model based on a physical model. I was under the impression that that was how most of the CGI models for Trek ships had their start -- partially due to the fact that the models already existed, but also since it creates a more realistic effect than just "building" a CGI model.

However it was done, it did come out with the same look that a lot of CGI has. In other words, it kinda looked like something from Babylon 5. ;-)

Very famous controversy regarding a decal that appeared on the original ERTL models of the Enterprise. There was a huge demand in the conventions for this "flawed" model, as the Franz Joseph Technical manual correctly pointed out that it was a port for repair access labeled 1384. It connected to a plasma conduit, also called the "fire" "wire" access.

Later it was determined that all the ERTL models, and even the new ones being produced in 1985 still had the "1364" marking incorrectly. To fix this, ERTL removed the 1364 decal and most folks building the model at that point had to use a small decal which was really the part id from the decal sheet. That was "iLnk"
