CNN reports this morning that award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith has passed away at the age of 75. Goldsmith had been battling cancer.

Goldsmith was one of the most influential artists to be involved in the STAR TREK franchise, beginning with his score for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE in 1979. Goldsmith received one of his 17 Academy Award nominations for that score, which became one of the most famous science fiction theme. Goldsmith later adapted it for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.

Goldsmith had began his career in the 1950s with composing for series like GUNSMOKE and HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, which featured several scripts from future STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry, and WAGON TRAIN. His career spanned westerns, war movies, and sci-fi movies from PATTON (1970) to THE PLANET OF THE APES (1968) to CHINATOWN (1974) to ALIEN (1979).

Goldsmith composed the scores for four other STAR TREK feature films, including THE FINAL FRONTIER, FIRST CONTACT, INSURRECTION, and most recently STAR TREK: NEMESIS in 2002. He created the majestic STAR TREK: VOYAGER main title theme, for which he won an Emmy Award in 1995. The composer also contributed the music for the new BORG INVASION 4-D at the STAR TREK Experience in Las Vegas.

Goldsmith was nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, 3 Saturn Awards, 4 Emmys and 9 Golden Globes.

Update: The official STAR TREK web site has posted reactions from Rick Berman and David C. Fein to Goldsmith's passing.

Well, to me, it's like it's going to be when Shatner or Nimoy passes away...a huge blow. I know I didn't know them personally, but it's impossible to not be affected by people who who you "grew up with" through their performances and talents.

There's a lot that can be said for Mr. Goldsmith...but I think the best thing to do is just go back and listen to the wealth of excellent film scores he composed over the years -- scores like:

Planet of the Apes
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Total Recall
Star Trek
Supergirl
Alien
The Mummy
The Omen series
Logan's Run
Legend
The Secret of Nimh
Mulan
King Soloman's Mines

..and so many more!

We may never see his like again...
