Nygard and Crosby's TREKKIES 2 Set to Premiere at Newport Beach Film Fest This Month

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 07:40, 3 April 2004 / General Genre/SciFi

The sequel to a popular and controversial 1997 documentary on STAR TREK fandom is about to hit theaters. TREKKIES 2, directed by Rogert Nygard and produced by STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION actress Denise Crosby, will make its world premiere April 20th at the Newport Beach Film Festival in Newport Beach, CA.

The Paramount Pictures film will be shown in the 650-seat historic Lido Theater on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, followed by a special Warp 11 live concert and after-party at the nearby Hard Rock Cafe. $15 buys a screening and after-party ticket and the filmmakers are expected to be in attendance.

The original TREKKIES sparked controversy for its depiction of the extreme side of STAR TREK fandom. The sequel set out to address those concerns, follow up with featured fans, and get a more international perspective. To make the film, Nygard, Crosby and their team visited nine STAR TREK conventions abroad and three in the United States to interview fans and compile material for the sequel.

The Newport Beach Film Festival brings 25,000 people from all over the world and showcases more than 250 films, offering an ambitious and international selection of features, shorts, documentaries and animation that will compete for both Jury and Audience awards. TREKKIES 2 will also be shown at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, TX April 24th, and the IFP Los Angeles Film Festival this June.

TREKKIES 2 will be distributed in a wider release by Paramount soon. Learn more about the film here.

Wonder why "Trekkies" was controversial? I thought the show was a riot! I've been a Trek fan for decades, I've purchased a fair amount of Trek merchandise, and have peripherally been involved with organized fandom since about '82.

Family and friends call me a "trekkie" and it doesn't offend me. People have always given me Trek presents, like clocks, mugs, posters, whatever -- more stuff than I know what to do with. So we laugh this stuff off.

IMHO, it's the "lifestyle" Trek fans who really do need a life. The ones who spend every spare dime on Trek merchandise, toys, Klingon language camp or whatever. You know -- the ones who get their shorts in a twist if someone calls them a "trekkie" instead of a "trekker" (oops, forgot to capitalize the "T"!!!)

These are the types who are lampooned in "Trekkies," folks that take Trek waaaaay to seriously. This flick holds up the mirror to them. I mean, if you're that into Trek, why not just embrace the fact that the rest of the world considers it a bit odd, and live your life the way you want? Or maybe they you're just jealous that Denise Crosby didn't include you in this flick!
