Features

By Steve Krutzler / 06:50, 9 March 2004 / People

Acclaimed stage and screen actor Paul Winfield, best known to STAR TREK fans as 'Captain Terrell' in 1982's STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, has died at age 62. The actor succumbed to a heart attack Sunday night, according to numerous sources. The actor had been suffering from diabetes according to his agent, who released a statement.

Winfield was nominated for an Academy Award for the 1972 film SOUNDER and an Emmy Award for best actor in 1978 for KING. He was nominated for Emmy's best supporting actor for ROOTS: THE NEXT GENERATION in 1979, and won an Emmy in 1995 for his guest role on the series PICKET FENCES. In 1978, PEOPLE magazine called Winfield "the most ubiquitous black TV/movie actor of the decade."

TREK fans may also recognize Winfield as 'Captain Dathon', the alien captain that 'Picard' must struggle to commuicate with in ST:TNG's "Darmok." Genre fans also spotted him in 1984's THE TERMINATOR. Winfield is survived by his sister, who lives in Las Vegas.

He was great in ST:II and Darmok is absolutely my favorite episode of all of Star Trek to date. He will be missed. Shaka...when the walls fell. His eyes blackened.

More than diabeties, he was suffering from the loss of his long time partner two years ago. Like many in Hollywood he was out in life, but not to the media.

Terrell was not the first black Captain on Trek (see "Court Martial"). But he was the first black man seen in the center seat.

... and I was really surprised, because I didn't know it at all.

I think it's an interesting thread of events that preceded the fact that I actually read the news about him.

I was to work in my mother's office regarding a website and at the same time manage my e-mails. The dynamic IP address behind which this computer is, got blocked for allegedly sending out a virus, then I tried (and failed) to send a message through Netscape WebMail, but since signing out of there gets me to the main page of home.netscape.com , where I read the headline in the news section that "'Star Trek,' 'Julia' Actor Dies" and got here: "Oscar-Nominated Actor Paul Winfield Dies" .

Since the article didn't contain any reference to "Star Trek", I went to IMDB.com and his first bio lines were

"His partner of 30 years, set designer and architect Charles Gillan Jr. ..."

And since "His partner" (and not wife, as it usually is with male actors) ringed a bell, I went on to read more.

The bad thing is that not only he was a black captain, but he was gay too, so I guess it's a double loss. At least he gets to join his partner in Heaven.

How is the loss of a great actor more tragic by the fact that he was black or that he was gay? I hope that I am misunderstanding the intent of your statement, and if I am I apologize ahead of time.

In a perfect world, it wouldn't be. But I suppose in so far as his craft exposed him and the kind of person he was to the general public, his life and death could serve to inform their opinionsand erase some of their misconceptionsabout members of those minorities. It is perhaps a loss of more than his life and his great talent. Frankly, the loss of his talent is enough to make me sad. But knowing the rest makes me more so.

Godspeed Mr. Winfield.

Am I mistaken in thinking he was the first African American Captain shown on TV or in film?
