I just watched TNG's pilot episode Encounter at Fairpoint on Spike TV. I haven't seen it in about 10 years, and for some reason I don't remember it being this bad.

If I had a dollar for every time they said "Sir" I'd be rich. The effects were bad, the story was boring and the tone was preachy. It's a miracle that TNG was greenlighted in the first place, let alone survived it's first year.

It just goes to show how much pent-up demand there was for Star Trek in 1987, fresh off the success of Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home. Because if that episode was rolled out today, it would be a laughingstock.

It pains me to go negative against my favorite Trek series, but the TNG premier was by far the worst of any Trek series.
