George III updates us on the status of Pocket Books' DS9 Relaunch novel series, kicking up again in September with the four-book MISSION GAMMA series and his own novel, TWILIGHT: "Twilight
picks up the continuity of the so-called "Deep Space Nine" Check out the full interview.
"For STAR TREK fans, the movie finally gets the treatment it deserves and you can treasure those all-enticing "missing scenes" for years to come. Meyer's new cut of the film brings nowhere near the level of improvement Robert Wise brought to THE MOTION PICTURE last year, but the effort here wasn't to improve so much as it was to add enjoyment to a superior film." Read much more in our full, comprehensive DVD review. 7/21 | Dominic Keating Talks "Minefield"-- TrekWeb recently caught up with ENTERPRISE actor Dominic Keating, who gave us a special interview about his hopes for the second season of the prequel series and chatted about the third episode of the year, "Minefield," which finds his Malcolm Reed stuck outside the ship in the series' first deadly Romulan episode: ”We’re shooting it right now,” he says as we reach the lobby. “It’s a great episode, it really bonds Captain Archer and Malcolm Reed, we have a lot of scenes together. It’s kind of ‘Shuttlepod One’ but with the captain outside rather [than trapped together with Reed]. I haven’t seen the sets, [but] it’s a great episode, you’re going to like it!” Check out the full interview here. FEATURE: Behind the Scenes of "Yesterday's Enterprise" Written by Steve
Krutzler Lincoln Enterprises -- the collectibles company founded by Gene and Majel Roddenberry in the 1960’s -- has released a new book entitled “The Making of Yesterday’s Enterprise” written by Eric Stillwell. Stillwell co-wrote the story for that episode and also served as script coordinator on ST:TNG and Star Trek: Insurrection. Serving as production associate for a time on ST:VOY, Stillwell co-wrote the “Prime Factors” story for that series and then in 1998 collaborated with Armin Shimerman (“Quark”) and David R. George III to co-write the story for the best-selling DS9 novel, “The 34th Rule.” Currently the script coordinator on USA Network’s original new series, The Dead Zone, Stillwell thought the time to tell the story of the popular episode from a writer's perspetive had finally arrived. “For years I had been wanting to write this book because the episode was so popular with the fans," he told us. "I had been saving file folders full of documents I had collected during the actual production of the episode thirteen years ago, including all the drafts of the story as it progressed. Last year, my wife finally convinced me to sit down and write the book.“ The book contains the final shooting script for "Yesterday's Enterprise" as well as all pre-production notations. Stillwell says he was inspired to take this angle for the book was a similar effort for the original series, "The Making of Star Trek," by Gene Roddenberry and Stephen E. Whitfield. “That book inspired my fascination with the behind-the-scenes aspects of television-making and eventually led me on my own path to Hollywood where I was extremely fortunate to land a job on Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987,” Stillwell recalls. This initial fascination eventually resulted in a travelling writer's workshop that Stillwell developed with other behind-the-scenes STAR TREK personnel took around the world to TREK conventions. The idea was to educate the hundreds of people submitting scripts under the TNG open script submission policy on some of the basics of Hollywood scriptwriting.
Throughout the Nineties, Stillwell's group moved on to different things (Braga co-created the fifth TREK series, ENTERPRISE), and it wasn't until just recently that Stillwell found a way to tap back into the wealth of the workshop idea. “I felt the information from those workshops was still important enough to impart to a whole new generation of would-be television writers, so, in part, “The Making of Yesterday’s Enterprise” is an attempt to share that information and discuss the process of television writing from beginning to end. Since I’m no longer doing the workshops, this is the next best thing," he exclaims. The third season TNG episode remains a fan favorite after all these years. In the April 2002 TV Guide honoring Star Trek’s 35th anniversary, “Yesterday’s Enterprise” was listed as one of the "top five classic episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Stillwell says the book also serves as a way to document the episode for posterity. "'The Making of Yesterday’s Enterprise' is geared to a specific nitch audience -- those interested in writing for television -- and fans who are simply curious about what it’s like to work behind-the-scenes on one of the most successful franchises in television history," Stillwell explains. "Because the book includes the complete final shooting script from 'Yesterday’s Enterprise,' plus copies of all the early story drafts and other never-before-seen production documents, I felt Lincoln Enterprises was uniquely suited to represent the book. They're the only company in the world with the license to sell all of the teleplays and screenplays from the Star Trek franchise. They also sell all the Writer’s/Director’s Guides and Technical Manuals developed for the various shows. For aspiring television writers, Lincoln Enterprises is an amazing resource.” says Stillwell. Additionally, Lincoln Enterprises is under new management. For years the company was run by Majel Barrett Roddenberry and her staff. Today, Gene Roddenberry, Jr. (Rod Roddenberry) is running the company and infusing a new youthful spirit into the company’s operations. Roddenberry is also working diligently to develop new, quality merchandise that will be unique in the Star Trek marketplace.
For Stillwell, it also brings life as a fan full circle: “When I was a kid, I used to send away for my Lincoln Enterprises catalogs in the mail. I was one of their best customers and I even subscribed to the newsletter they published in the late 1970’s. Through that newsletter, I met Barbara Watson, my pen-pal and very dear friend from Baltimore. We were both in junior high school at the time. That was before computers and email! But we used to write to each other every week for the longest time. As we grew to adulthood, we nearly lost track of each other, but in recent years, with the advent of email, we’ve become regular correspondents again -- 25 years after first being introduced through Lincoln Enterprises! It’s great to renew old relationships -- and that’s exactly how I feel about the chance to work with Lincoln Enterprises.” Those interested in

Written for TrekWeb by Jaqueline Bundy Just like the old adage about the glass being either half full or half empty, depending upon your point of view summer has barely begun or it is almost over. But no matter how you yourself choose to look at it there is still plenty of time to catch up on your Star Trek reading this summer. Let’s take a look at what’s about to become available. *New Releases*
In “Errand of Vengeance” the Klingon Empire and the Federation stand on the brink of war. What makes the story so compelling is that it is told from the perspective of Lt. Jon Anderson, a Klingon operative on an undercover assignment aboard the USS Enterprise, and Lt. West, a fresh from the Academy idealist working as an aide at Starfleet headquarters. Despite the cultural differences both men have a lot in common and the reader has a front row seat as their individual experiences force each to question the perceptions and beliefs that until now have always been a cornerstone of their lives. I was taken aback by the quality of Mr. Ryan’s story. It reminds me in many ways of the classic TOS novel “The Final Reflection” for the insights the story provides into the Klingon mindset and culture during the 23rd century. As events unfold in these three novels the characters are forced to look within themselves to discover what duty and honor really mean. From 1998 to 2000, Amazing Stories the world's oldest science fiction magazine, presented a series of original Star Trek stories written by a number of bestselling authors. Now these little seen Star Trek adventures have been collected together for the first time in a trade paperback entitled appropriately “The Amazing Stories”. Among the contributors are fan favorites A.C. Crispin, Greg Cox and Christie Golden. All of the stories are either TNG or Voyager and there is quite a bit of variety in the writing styles. Included in this volume of stories are two that were scheduled to be printed before the magazine ceased publication. The SCE ebook this month is “Foundations-Book 2” by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. Following up on the events of book one, this second part of the trilogy takes us back to learn what happened on Beta III after Kirk convinced Landru to deactivate itself. Betan society is left in ruins and it’s up to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, along with some of the crew of the Enterprise on special assignment to help them rebuild not only their technology but their culture as well. “Foundations-Book 2” is now available for download from Amazon.com and will be available within a few days at all the usual book sites offering ebooks. Although the framing story in each part of this trilogy is a story unto itself it’s not necessary to read all three parts to enjoy any one of these ebooks. If you would like to read an excerpt from either book one or two of “Foundations” they are now available at the Psi Phi Star Trek Book Database.

His first novel “A Stitch in Time” was universally acclaimed as one of the best science fiction novels of 2000. A word of caution though, Mr. Robinson’s proposed story still has to undergo the approval process at Paramount so despite the dither that this news has caused in the fan community it will be some time before the book would actually be available. Still, it’s welcome news and I for one am thrilled to learn there is another Garak novel to look forward to. Congratulations to author Greg Cox; Dreamwatch magazine has chosen “The Eugenics Wars-Volume One” as the best science fiction novel of 2001. Not the best Star Trek novel or best media-tie-in novel; the best SF novel. Marco Palmieri has announced a schedule change that effects the upcoming “Mission Gamma” titles. The release of “Mission Gamma-Book Four, Lesser Evil” by Robert Simpson has been moved from October 2002 to November 2002. This change will allow the paperback reprint of the Gateways saga conclusion “What Lay Beyond” to move up the list from November to October. More tidbits about the 2003 novel schedule are trickling out from Pocket Books. Two new TOS paperbacks have been added. “Gemini” by Mike W. Barr has been scheduled for February 2003 and “Garth of Izar” by Pamela Sargent and George Zebrowski will hit stores in March 2003. A revised edition of “The Next Generation Companion” will be published In January 2003 and the long anticipated “Voyager Companion” has been approved and should be available in the spring of 2003. Last but not least word comes from author David R. George that he and Armin Shimerman (co-authors of the DS9 novel “The 34th Rule”) have agreed to participate in a writers seminar at the Farpoint convention in February 2003. I’ll pass on more specifics about this when they become available. Well that’s the latest roundup of Star Trek book news. Be sure to look for new book reviews from Alexander Chase at TrekWeb.
