Composer Michael Giacchino on the Possibilities of Scoring Star Trek XII

Features

By GustavoLeao / 01:06, 8 September 2010 / Star Trek: Nemesis

TrekMovie.com posted a new video interview with Star Trek composer Michael Giacchinno conducted after the screening of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie at the Royal Theater in West LA this past weekend. Here are excerpts courtesy of TrekMovie

  • Giacchino wrote music for the deleted Klingon scenes, but "would not want anyone to hear it" as it didn't think the scenes worked and didn't think the music worked, and his "happy to have it gone"
  • Would not use the Klingon music in sequel, noting "when and if they do bring Klingons back, I know it will be for the right reasons and will be part of the story and it will be easier for me to write music because I will have something to react to"
  • On sequel and if they will use original Trek music: "I have no idea. It depends on the story" later saying "I have no idea until I see the film. I don't know what the film needs - what it asks for until I see it. I could sit here and say I really hope so, it would be fun to find a moment to do something like that. And certainly as fans we all deserve that kind of fun. I hope so, but I can't say no"

  • More excerpts and the full video interview is here,

I've been reading the posts here and I am a bit surprised at the backlash at Michael. I don't know much about his work but I found he did a good job on ST9. I do agree some of the themes were reused too often but that happens a lot in Trek by other composers. Overall, it was not a back soundtrack and I just loved hearing the original (Alex's) theme at the end. It made up for any mistakes for me.

I wish JJ was not so married to this guy. I was so underwhelmed by his score for ST 2009. I thought it was the weakest part of the film from a technical stand point. His work is what I like to call musical wallpaper. It's sufficient to set a backdrop for the scene, but when you try to listen to it outside of the realm of the movie it just doesn't have much there. I dream of what ST 2009 would have been like with a James Horner or Goldsmith or better yet a Hans Zimmer score. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see any JJ Abrams film without Giachano. It's a shame.
