James Cameron Says He Wants to Compete with Tolkien, Star Wars and Star Trek

Features

By GustavoLeao / 06:44, 26 August 2010 / Star Trek: Nemesis

LA Times posted an extensive interview with Avatar director James Cameron and here is an excerpt.

"You've got to compete head on with these other epic works of fantasy and fiction, the Tolkiens and the ‘Star Wars' and the ‘Star Treks,'" Cameron said. "People want a persistent alternate reality to invest themselves in and they want the detail that makes it rich and worth their time. They want to live somewhere else. Like Pandora."

The filmmaker is finishing a companion novel to "Avatar" that will go further into the characters, the history and the environs presented in the movie's story. At one point he had hoped the book would be finished in time for linked release with the film last year, but that didn't happen.

Cameron said it may be on shelves in time for the holidays.

"It gets into the nuts and bolts of the Na'vi culture, their lore and mythology, and has more about Dr. Grace [Sigourney Weaver's character] and her time on Pandora, but it doesn't go beyond the end of the film other than to tease a little bit about what's going to happen next. It will also be the bible for any future publication, a look-up guide for future writers who can come in and work within the world.... Think about all the ‘Star Trek' novels and how they contradicted each other for a few years and it made it tricky to be a Trekkie for a while."

I wasn't that impressed by "Avatar". I mean, it's ok. It certainly has some beautiful visuals to it. Story and "beat you over the head with it" message-wise, I've seen and heard it all before in MUCH better movies and tv shows (Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, The Last Samurai, etc./etc./etc. You've heard all the comparisons by now).

Plus, I've got to say I don't think I care for Sam Worthington as an actor. There's just something about his performance style (unfortunately, I can't put my finger on what that "something" is) that rubs me the wrong way.

Unfortunately, as much as I usually have enjoyed James Cameron's films, I just don't see myself investing my time in the world of Pandora beyond this first film.

And, because it will annoy Muldfeld (Though I do happen to truly believe it as well), Abrams' "Star Trek" was WAY BETTER than "Avatar".

I really think that Avatar was lightning in a bottle- right time, right place. I know one guy who is absolutely in love with that world/mythology, but most people seem to think it was a spectacular special effects movie with a flimsy plot.

I don't seeing people writing avatar fan fiction, in other words. I mean really, what would it be about? The movie is all style and no substance. The tail things are kind of a novel concept, I guess...

Okay.

I loved Avatar. I got the Blu-Ray and I will see the special edition when it opens in theaters here in Brazil, I got to admit that.

But to compare Avatar to the works of Tolkien and the Trek and SW franchises ? Geee. I dont think so.

While Avatar was a beautiful movie to watch, the story wasn't exactly new or compelling. It's almost at beating dead horse status by this point.

He makes a great point. And Pandora's great biological diversity was certainly the major highlight of Avatar, at least for me.

But if Cameron wants to compete with Wars, Tolkien, and Trek, he's going to need more than awesome flora and fauna.
