I think it's brilliant in how it conveys what's going on.

The Wrath Of Khan is the greatest, don't get me wrong but I've always thought there was one major plot hole: Starfleet never kept tabs on Khan? They just stayed away, never contacted him and hoped the Klingons or Romulans never stumbled upon him? Planets usually don't just blow up without SOME advance warning, they never bothered to send a ship to rescue him and his people? Or maybe they WERE watching and were hoping this take care of the problem once and for all.

I'm sure Greg Cox addresses all these issues in his Khan trilogy but he overburdens his novels with continuity until they are no longer fun to read.
