Stand by Wil Wheaton at the Phoenix Comicon

Actor Wil Wheaton has confirmed he will be attending the Phoenix Comicon. Wheaton is best known for his roles of Wesley Crusher on television's Star Trek: The Next Generation and Gordi LaChance in the movie Stand by Me.

"Wil Wheaton is as down-to-Earth as any star I've ever met," said Marketing Director Anabel Martinez, "We're setting up a Rock Band stage for him so he can jam with his fans."

Although his most popular role was that of Wesley Crusher, Wheaton admits he had a love/hate relationship with the character.  Gordi LaChance was more complex.  Stand by Me was the film adaptation of Stephen King's somber coming-of-age novella The Body.

In addition to the acting roles he's best known for, Wheaton is also an accomplished writer and improv performer.  Wheaton maintains a blog called Wil Wheaton Dot Net, which has garnished him a fan base independent of the Star Trek spotlight.

"Wil is always a hit at our convention, we're so happy he's going to make it out to Phoenix again," said Convention Director Matt Solberg.

During the late 90's and early 2000's Wheaton worked on a number of independent projects, earning accolades for his role in the film Jane White is Sick and Twisted.  Wheaton has also done a number of voice work projects lately. Notably, he voiced the radio newsman in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

JONATHAN FRAKES ATTENDS PHOENIX COMICON

Actor and director boldly going to Phoenix in May 2010

Phoenix, Ariz.-Actor and director Jonathan Frakes, best known for the role of Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, has announced that he will attend Phoenix Comicon.

"Frakes is a legend to Star Trek fans and we're so excited to have him at Phoenix Comicon," said Matt Solberg, Convention Director. "Our continuing mission is to keep finding great talent like Frakes to make this the best convention we've ever had."

Frakes starred as the first officer on the Enterprise in all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and in four Star Trek films. In his role of William Riker, he played a bold and ambitious young officer who eventually grows into his role as second-in-command under Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Frakes made his directorial debut by directing eight episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation; and went on to direct feature films such as Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Clockstoppers. Recently, Frakes directed episodes of TV series Dollhouse, Castle, and Leverage.

"As a Star Trek fan, I'm delighted that Jonathan Frakes is beaming into Phoenix Comicon," said Anabel Martinez, Director of Marketing. "It's so great to have someone who was a part of Star Trek and now is doing fantastic things with Dollhouse and Castle!"

LeVar Burton Engineering a Trip to Phoenix Comicon

LeVar Burton, the actor best known for his role of helmsman Geordi La Forge on the hit series Star Trek: The Next Generation, has announced he will be attending the 2010 Phoenix Comicon.

"LeVar Burton is a science-fiction giant but he's probably had more impact as a humanitarian," said Convention Director Matt Solberg.  Burton created, hosted and produced the Public Television series Reading Rainbow, which aired for 26 years and encouraged youth literacy.

"I still want to pick up a book after watching an episode of Reading Rainbow," said Director of Marketing Anabel Martinez, "LeVar Burton taught me to love reading."

The breakthrough role for Burton was his portrayal of Kunta Kinte, a slave character from Alex Haley's book Roots, adapted to a television series in 1977.  Burton also voiced the character of Kwame on Captain Planet and the Planeteers, the popular children's series that helped spearhead the environmental movement.

By far, however, Burton's most popular role has been that of Geordi La Forge on the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and in the movies that followed.  La Forge was a sharp-witted engineer who solved many of the series' technical problems.  La Forge also served as a teacher of humanity through his companionship with the android character Data.

More info can be found at Phoenix Comicon's website, http://www.phoenixcomicon.com.

Phoenix Comicon is the signature pop culture event of the southwest, presenting guests and programming for hobbyists by attracting the top segments of the comics, anime, sci-fi, film, tv, and gaming industries.  Entering its ninth year, Phoenix Comicon is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees to its May 27-30, 2010 convention held at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency, downtown Phoenix.
