Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to Develop Projects for Fox Television for 3 Years

By GustavoLeao / 12:43, 3 February 2010 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to Variety, Star Trek movie writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have signed an exclusive three-year deal with 20th Century Fox TV. As part of the deal, which officially starts March 1, the duo will bring in show ideas, recruit writers to work with them and also create their own projects, either by themselves or with others.

According to the article, 20th Century Fox TV chairman Dana Walden couldn't be happier with the deal. "We've been pursuing this deal for quite some time," said Walden. "They would elevate any type of development. But they were very thoughtful about the kind of commitment they were making. They didn't want to overpromise."

As for the writer/producers themselves, they are equally as excited.
"We've been excited about going back into TV, but wanted to wait until the feature side of our company was on its feet," Kurtzman said.

"One of the things that drew us back to TV was the idea that we could do the kind of stories that we're not known for in features," said Orci. "From sci-fi to procedurals to medical genres, those are all the kind of shows that we love."

I just love everything that John Ya-Ya and John Small Berries write! I'm all giddy like a little school girl.

For you sports fans, it seems as if there's something of an "Abrams tree" of talent that seems to be gaining more influence in hollywood similar to the Bill Parcells tree of coaches in the NFL.

Is it my imagination, but are Orci and Kurtzman now up to something like their sixth or seventh major project? With all this going on, not to mention ongoing concerns like Fringe, one has to wonder when they'll have time to work on a little thing like Star Trek XII.

In other news, Fox has promised to stay par for the network by cancelling every good show the pair develops.

give us a star trek show! | Report this post to moderator

Hey, do a different ship in the NuTOS timeline if you have to...just give us a high quality Trek TV show.

I love having Trek movies, but they inevitably have to feature a bad guy or saving the entire world. Trek was always better on TV when it was used to examine a morality issue for an hour, using an alien race or situation as a metaphor for a real-world problem. I miss that kind of storytelling. And that's what they seem to be saying here. We could even have a season or two or three in the NuTOS timeframe and then the whole crew gets catapaulted to the post-Nemesis timeframe, which would likely differ very little from the original timeframe at that point. We could maybe even observe the destruction of Romulus (or the salvation of Romulus and Re-Unification of Romulans and Vulcans) and then tie in with other TNG-era shows and even Trek Online.

Okay, i'm getting ahead of myself...but let's see Trek on TV again! It won't hurt the movie franchise. Everyone'll go to see the next two movies no matter what.
