Scott Bakula Praises J.J. Abrams Star Trek Movie, Wants Archer in Star Trek XII

Features

By GustavoLeao / 23:57, 6 December 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

TrekMovie.com posted a new interview with Star Trek Enterprise star Scott Bakula and here is an excerpt.

TrekMovie: Lets switch to some Star Trek stuff. Assuming you saw the new movie, how did you feel about the reference to Admiral Archer?

Scott Bakula:
It went by so fast and there was so much going on that I almost didn't think that I had heard it, because it was the dog reference and I was like "did I just hear that?" My two sons, they were all caught up and they didn't care about my backstory, so when I asked them if they heard it, they didn't remember it. So I had to confirm it with other people. I thought it was very clever. I thought JJ Abrams did a great job with the movie and everybody was great and it was a huge success for the studio.

TrekMovie:
I talked to Bob Orci, who co-wrote the movie, and he told me that in his mind that reference was to your character, who was still alive at that time.

Scott Bakula:
I really appreciate that. Maybe I will get in the next one. All I want to do is beating Shatner out for being in the next one.

I had to confirm it by Googling and found (http://tv.yahoo.com/enterprise/show/30255), but the "Enterprise" TV series took place 100 years before James T. Kirk became Captain of the Enterprise.

Even as an Admiral according to the new Star Trek movie, Archer would have to have been 135-145 years old.

I like the nod, but that part of the movie didn't make any sense, and Porthos the dog would never outlast his owner.

Would have been great to see Scotty had discovered the location of Porthos and that he was alive and well. He retrieves the prize beagle and returns him home (maybe a very elderly Adm Archer or ancestor). It does not need to be a long scene and it no words even have to be spoken. For me as a dog lover my heart would have melted with a scene like that.

Cameo, or plot-critical? | Report this post to moderator
By: Cpt. Insano (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:22:48 on Dec 08, 2009 | Edit History (2)

I think, given the verbal cameo in XI, that the plot of XII can hinge around The Search For Porthos, and that's how Archer can be critical to bridge the movie, because when they find Porthos, the poor dog's been assimilated by a not-borg race of life-size amoeba viruses that absorbed the dog's consciousness and set them on the warpath to Earth for abandoning the dog to such a cruel transporter experiment.

So the crew have to find and rescue Archer, institutionalised after the loss of his dog and a nervous breakdown, who must then convince the approaching gelatinous planet eating space mass imprinted with the dog's consciousness, not to eat Earth.

Archer then saves the day by stealing a space suit, going out in a space walk, and then holding a ball up at the space blob Porthos. With a tear in his eye, Archer says "One last fetch, boy!", and throws the ball* into the Sun.

Archer, Shatner | Report this post to moderator

Getting Archer in for a cameo would be allright. I dont think most of the new generation will really care either way, and it's an easy nod to the 4 or 5 people in the world that could actually stomach Enterprise :)

People keep saying you cant't get Kirk Prime into the story, but I'm not sure that's such a big deal. You could have an easy cameo with "Q" for example. It could be a "Tapestry" like experience where Kirk Prime sees what his life could have been. You could toss in a TNG reference by Q for those fans. You have to do something about Shatners appearance to make this work.

I agree that these types of appearances should be really short and not distract from the main plot. It's time for the new generation to drive things, and just have these cameos as thoughtful acknowledgments to the loyal fans who stuck with Trek all these years.

cool, cameos! | Report this post to moderator

Why not just have a Star Trek variety hour hosted by all the former actors? The DS9 dancing girls led by Major Kira would be a hit.

Seriously though, I think the franchise is turning into a joke.

Much as I like Shatner, his character did indeed die; and it would have to be beyond clever to have him in any new ST film and not feel his presence wasn't contrived.
Bakula did a great job as Archer (whether or not one liked Enterprise)... I'd l0ve to see him in STXII.

Now I'd pay for that | Report this post to moderator

I'd pay for Bakula to be in the next movie just to rub it into Shatner, after all the public negotiating for position in the first one and losing out due to ego.
