Harlan Ellison Wants to Work with J.J. Abrams in Star Trek XII

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:17, 24 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to TrekToday, famed science fiction author Harlan Ellison, writer of the fan favorite TOS episode "The City on The Edge of Forever", thinks highly of Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and wouldn't hesitate to get involved with the Star Trek XII production team if he were contacted by Abrams or Paramount. Here are excerpts of their report.

"I would jump at the chance to work with the inordinately-talented J.J. Abrams on a new Star Trek film," Ellison wrote at his blog.

"Yes, I would likely try to steer him toward the original film idea I was asked to pitch, by the late Gene Roddenberry and a production exec whose name I have blissfully flensed from memory (but he had been, if I recall, a hairdresser or clothing designer or ex-boyfriend of someone or other, and he kept trying to press me to include the Mayan Calendar)."

"If the very smart Abrams didn't want to go that way, I would be wide-open to rethinking such a film from the git-go," said Ellison.

"If anyone out there thinks this melding has legs, let Abrams or anyone else with the chops to get in touch with me directly," he said. "I am without full-time film-agent representation, by choice, at the moment; so if the job presents itself, I will work for pay."

More from Ellison on the original article at TrekToday.

What, you mean Harlan Ellison still exists? I thought his ego had become so massive that it collapsed into a black hole. What an insufferably arrogant jerk.

will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show!.... You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! -- William Shatner on Saturday Night Live (1986)

What I find particularly funny is that Ellison still wants to do the same story he pitched 33 years ago; all that time and he hasn't come up with a better idea?

I read his screenplay to City; while it was a good story it wasn't particularly good Star Trek, with characters doing and saying stuff that was way out of character. Would James T. Kirk actually allow his future to be destroyed and Hitler to come to power just so he could be with Edith Keeler? According to Ellison, yes. Riiiiight. I also still haven't figured out why Beckwith, the villain of the piece, suddenly decided to do the right thing and try to save Edith at the end after the screenplay went out of its way to show how irredeemable the character was. I also think the final conception of the Guardian of Forever, which was quite different from what we got in Ellison's screenplay, was the superior one.

Add me to the list of people who hope he never gets anywhere near Trek again. While he'd probably bring some interesting ideas to the table, it's a safe bet that he'd also bring a lot of baggage and that most of his stuff would be all but infilmable.

Like most have said, J.J. should stay far away from Harlan Ellison. I doubt he would even be considered because I think J.J. has his own group of writers that he trusts from Alias, Lost, etc. and he wouldn't include someone like Harlan who possibly could fly off the handle and start suing and spewing negative publicity if something didn't pan out exactly the way he wanted it to.
This was basically a shot in the dark for Harlan. Should by some random act of madness J.J. called him after he'd had a few shots of rye celebrating his fame, Harlan could rope him into signing him on, but it's highly doubtful this attention grabbing press release will recoup any benefit for him.

I wouldn't touch this guy with a 10-foot pole. He is a one-hit wonder if there ever was one. Yes, the episode he wrote is by far the best of The Original Series, we get it. But times have changed and he has made it clear that he is trigger happy with lawsuits and I just don't think he is even relevant enough anymore to blink at.

I read Harlan's script for THE CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER. It was beautiful and haunting. HOWEVER, it featured characters who weren't regulars in the cast and involved drug dealing on the Enterprise. Gene Roddenberry's edits were necessary and made the script and story even better. Harlan can never understand that because he wrote the original script and in his eyes someone else "tampered" with it. I'm sure this is hard to accept for an author, but nevertheless, Gene's revision is the better one for TREK.

Harlan was threatening to sue JJ and Co. a while back. Now he's begging to work with him? What the hell?

Ellison...I love you, dude...but you're just not worth the aggravation to a major movie studio. You're one of the greats, but the reason you never get these types of offers is that you're just a nightmare to work with.

.... Surely Paramount and Abrahms would be too wise to go down this dark path. How great would an Ellison story be? It could easily be the best of the movies, and it could even be one of the best films of that year.

How bad could it get? If Ellison wanted to stray from Trek more than Abrahms and co wanted to go- if there ended being some disagreement - or one of a hundred other factors - the little tyrant would make a stink to get his name off the movie or sue or go on a publicity tour to trash the movie or any combination of all three.

I hope the City business is truly in our past. I still think his story is among the very best of Trek's stories (along with The Visitor, they might be the two best). I wish him luck, long life, and prosperity - but away from Trek.

...extremely talented. Immensely odd. I'd love to see what he'd come up with working with this writing staff.
