TrekMovie.com posted new video interviews with Star Trek actors Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (McCoy), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), John Cho (Sulu) and Bruce Greenwood (Pike) in which they talk about what they want for their characters in Star Trek XII. Here are excerpts, courtesy of TrekMovie

  • John Cho Suggests that after the "external, physical action" for Sulu in first film that for the sequel "maybe we turn Sulu's battle internal"
  •

  • Zachary Quinto likes the idea of "exploring the dilemma" of Spock's half human/half vulcan heritage, noting that it is "shifting"
  •

  • Karl Urban would like to see Bones "come into that triumvirate figure that is so central to the series" between Kirk and Spock
  •

  • Greenwood would like to see Pike "on site" and not "back on Earth"
  •

  • Greenwood does not want Pike in "the chair", noting "the blinking, the beeping, it's been done

Yes, YES, YES!!! That is about the ONLY thing about the new movie that I truly missed. For me, the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triumvirate is what gave soul to TOS and to the TOS movies. Spock was the calm reason, McCoy was the passionate conscience, and Kirk leveraged (indeed, he relied on) the two in nearly every action he took.

Plus, it brings a character dynamic that opens up all sorts of possibilities. McCoy has been shown to be a sort of mentor to young Kirk; the next movie is perfect timing to expand on that: Kirk is extremely competent, but he needs the seasoning that only comes with experience. McCoy can help provide that.

Additionally, the banter between the three has been fodder for some of the best entertainment in Trek. Remember the debate between Spock and McCoy in Kirk's quarters about the Genesis project? As they were getting started, Kirk's expression was perfect: here they go again. With the next movie, we can get to see how it all began between the three of them.

Bob, Alex, and JJ, if you're listening: please bring back the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triumvirate! Have the next move be about whatever... as long as it's also about Kirk, Spock, -AND- McCoy.

We see in both this movie and in The Cage the kind of guy Pike is when he's on the field so to speak and I think it would be sad if the Pike of this time line ends up similar to the TOS version. I found it so eerie to see him in that wheelchair at the end of the film.
