Roberto Orci on the Status of the Star Trek XII Script and the Possibility of Producing a New Star Trek TV Series

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:55, 21 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

TrekMovie.com posted an exclusive video interview with Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof and here are excerpts courtesy of TrekMovie.

  • On status of the Star Trek XII script: the team "will be having preliminary conversations on all the areas we are gravitating towards, then meditate over Christmas and hit the ground running in the new year"
  •

  • On if Star Trek could work on TV again, Orci states: "I have to say yes...good stories are good stories and some of the stories in the Trek vault are the best stories around. It is just a matter of the energy and the context of putting it in there."
  •

  • Orci would be interested in producing a new "Star Trek" TV show, but not being show-runner, agrees Manny Coto would be a good choice
  •

If Star Trek returns to TV... | Report this post to moderator

The only thing I'll be interested in is a truly unapologetic reboot. Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and the Enterprise. No ridiculous alternate universe explanations, and definitely no Captain Archibald Poindexter of the Federation Timeship Excalibur or Captain Jose Fernandez of the Enterprise-W. Just give us real Star Trek. Kirk, Spock, and the big E, and imaginitive stories relevent for the world today by todays SF masters.

They probably will anyway. I think it is very safe to assume the following:
    (1) The sequel will have a better box office than the film that preceeded it.
    (2) There will be a third film produced as a result of this success.

This third film will be released in 2014 or 2015 if we follow the current trend. Once they have their three films in the bag and the success of Star Trek on the big screen is assured, then you start developing a new TV series.

If I had to put money on it now? I would bet that the TV series will be set in the new universe, but featuring a different crew obviously. The film franchise could (and likely will) continue on congruent to the TV show, with a few characters crossing over as well. Can't wait!

If the new series doesn't have Bill Shatner in it, I am not going to watch. Who's going to join my boycott?

I agree - but not yet | Report this post to moderator

I agree that Trek on TV will work again, but it's still too soon to be considering a new ongoing TV series, not after the spectacular burnout of the Trek franchise in 2005. I'm not sure if I'd even watch a new show because I spent years defending Enterprise and, to a much lesser degree, Voyager and it rather spoiled things for me.

If they're going to do another Trek series, I'd like them to wait till at least 2015. That'll have made 10 years since Enterprise ended, and by then Enterprise will have entered the "age makes people fonder of it" zone. Ditto Voyager.

Also, I'd rather they wait to see what happens to standard broadcast TV in the next few years before committing. Depending how things are evolving, the next Trek series might well be better off being produced for a niche cable network or for the Internet, rather than for one of the mainstream networks. (First-run syndication is no longer viable).

"Some of the stories in the Trek vault are the best stories around".

Maybe Abrams and Orci figure they can reboot them all! ...creatively bankrupt assholes.

J.J. and Orci agree a TV series is a definite possibility. And keep in mind they, Kurtzman, and Lindelof all are either working in TV now or got their start there.

I'm thinking momentum is building for a TV series to happen.

Very Interesting 'speculation' | Report this post to moderator

That's certainly a most interesting bit of information.
That's the first word from this group about the possibility, and their interest in possibly putting together a new ST series. Let's hope that much underlies his speculation. :) :) :)
