Karl Urban Says Trek XII Must be Like Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:18, 19 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

IGN posted a new interview with Star Trek star Karl Urban (McCoy) and here are excerpts.

Regarding McCoy role in Star Trek XII, Urban said "I would love to play scenes being essentially Kirk's moral compass or point of conscience. The way McCoy was written he really sort of verbalized the war going on in Kirk's conscience, and I certainly would love to see more arguments of passion versus logic with Spock because they're always fun. So it's going to be really interesting to see what they come up with."

He added, "I think the challenge is to come up with the most important mission, the mission that literally tears these people apart. The mission that is the definitive Trek mission. We have to come up with something akin to a Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back. Something like that."

The full interview is here.

I agree with Karl. And I think Kirk needs his "Joker", a twisted mad genius who is nonetheless a sympathetic figure in some respects.
I go back to my idea of having Garth of Izar as the villian. You could show him as the prototype Fleet Captain to start with and then he goes mad after a horrible accident and the Antos people recreation.

Add some menace , a ragtag group of aliens that are willing to follow him in his delusional plan to take over the Federation (and everyone else), plus his shapeshifting. and you have a fairly potent villian.

The crew could be split on how to deal with him, since his condition is fundamentally a curable medical event (this would give some scope for Bones to be Kirk's conscience). The ending could be him getting the cure and returning to his former self, a rather pleasant deviation from the standard Hollywood shoot-em-up. Trek is supposed to be about a little more than just killing villians. It's supposed to be an optimistic view of the future where matters can be resolved in different ways.

Note that the story does allow for plenty of gratuitous sex and action ( you could definetely have Marta back), so it should appeal to that faction of the audience as well.

So would I, but I don't think we're going to get that much of it. That said, there is hope that now everything's in place as it were, they'll be able to focus on making a good pop Sci-Fi film. The first one essentially failed in it's goal of showing how Kirk came of age, perhaps the next one will succeed in developing him further.

So...no pressure, guys. ;)

The first one was a nice rollercoaster ride with stunning SFX and some nice acting. It brought the characters together in this timeline and it had the most moving and shocking scene in Trek yet: the loss of planet Vulcan. The humor was great, the directing superb and yet, it was not the Star Trek movie we've all been waiting for yet!

There is so much more to Star Trek than what could be portrayed in one movie so focused on getting things started. Now that the new five year mission has started, they really need to push the envelope a bit further...not just in terms of visual elements but also storywise! The first one was "just" about getting started...now let's see what's out there!

They have a choice here:

Will they give us another Dark Knight, a movie developing the characters and exploring new depths of the human spirit and whole new narrative dimensions?

Or will they give us another Quantum of Solace, a movie trying to outdo the first one visually by overdoing it with an even faster pace and even more lense flares but falling flat and estranging those who have gotten hooked by the reboot concept? What will it be?
