J.J. Abrams on Directing Star Trek XII, John Cho Says Khan Should Be the Villain

ComingSoon.net posted new interviews with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and actor John Cho (Sulu) and here are excerpts.

Q: What are the elements that would have to line up to make you direct the next "Star Trek" film?

Abrams: The truth is, the idea of anyone else directing the next "Star Trek" film breaks my heart. I had the most fun ever with these people. But, it's impossible to know when the script is done. That's the time to look at it and ask, "is this the right thing for the movie? Is it the right thing for me? My family?" and all that stuff. It's so hard to know a year out with no script in existance if I should direct the movie. I look forward to making that decision when the time comes.

The full interview with Abrams is here.

ComingSoon asked Cho where he'd like his character, Sulu, to go in Star Trek XII.

"This experience was very different for me as an actor because it was such an external thing for me. I've never done a big action sequence and never trained like that. It might be fun to go internal this time. I don't know what that might be."

As far as which villian he thinks should be brought back, Cho is leaning towards Khan.

"He is the baddest of them all in my opinion and the coolest hair cut. I'm ready to bring that cut back for my own self."

The full interview with Cho is here.

The problem with Khan is that it wasn't so much that Khan was the ultimate badass villain--it was that Montalban and Shatner made that rivalry brilliant.

It was the actors as much as the characters. Pine will not and should not do an impression of Shatner as Kirk. But the character at least should evolve into the Kirk we all know. Pine's Kirk was brash and cocky, but a natural leader. Yet he didn't have that passion that Shatner put into the character. That will be hard to convey, though I bet it can be done.

I don't think Khan is as hard to recast as Kirk. I think a guy like Antonio Banderas can do the job. Khan may be Indian, but the actor that brought him life was latino, and I don't think a non-latino actor can do Khan justice.

I don't think that this cast is ready for Khan. But in reality, the Khan story was done and done well. They need some adventure that establishes THIS crew as the top notch crew it was in the series. The next movie should showcase their brilliance, from Kirk on down the line. No more inexperience. Let them peak.

They can't top the Khan stories or even equal them, and ultimately, you have a villain that I believe the majority of fans think should be left alone.

The Klingon Empire, the badguys, are a better choice.

You know it to be true. Also: Kahn can't fit into one movie. Has to be the Space Seed-ish meeting the first time and the second go around is when Kahn is all ticked off. The specifics can, and should, change around but the overall arc should be the same.
