J.J. Abrams Says He Agrees with Almost Every Criticism About His Star Trek Movie

Features

By GustavoLeao / 18:58, 15 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

TrekMovie.com posted the first part of an extensive interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and here is an excerpt.

TrekMovie: Looking at all the feedback on the film, was there any that you are most proud of? And also, any possible negative feedback that you took to heart, things you might want to change?

J.J. Abrams:
Having read a lot and heart a lot, at the end of the day, the thing I am most happy about is that the thing that many were saying was insurmountable, that ‘how do you possibly recast this movie, how do you possibly have these characters live on without these original actors playing them?'. That that challenge seemed to have been met. That this cast was watchable, likeable, relatable, and the actors were talented enough, that that criticism was silenced and we were able to allow the crew of the Enterprise to live on with a new generation of actors. And that to me is the biggest accomplishment, which goes completely to the actors and the work that they did.

In terms of criticisms, I agree with almost every criticism I read. It is hard not to be hard on the work that you do. So when I hear someone say "Nero was not complicated enough" I say "yeah, that's right." Or if I hear "there are some moments-that crazy coincidence that Kirk meets Spock in the ice cave and that took me out of it", I can see that. I don't really hear much that I don't agree with. If someone were to say "Giacchino's music doesn't work" I would disagree with that, but that is a taste issue and you can't really account for that. So for the most part I am incredibly proud of the cast, really honored to be involved in this movie. It was an incredible experience.

The full interview, in which Abrams also talks about the DVD and Blu-Ray, is here.

I don't know if it's safe to say that he agrees with EVERY criticism. He doesn't address ALL of them, like Chekov's age, the exterior of the ship, the writing of Scotty (arguably the worst aspect of the movie). I guess in Trek 12, if we see Scotty written more like he was in the original series, we'll get a clue as to how much he took the criticism to heart.

JJ should be proud | Report this post to moderator

Considering the fact that he took a great, but crippled, franchise and made it great again should be the one thing that should make JJ proud. No matter what he did there were going to be critics. He did the best he could. The criticisms he mentioned are in some ways valid but I don't think they were much of a big deal. I loved this movie and he I cannot wait to get me a DVD and BR copy!

I seriously hope he has already read some critizism about the engineering designs. THIS is the most pivotal aspect that should be changed for the next movie. No more brewery sets plaese! Let's say that the ship was still under construction in these parts and - with those warpcores gone - will now undergo refinement in the engineering section. It has to! That was the only aspect that really bothered me design-wise. The bridge was neat.

Some say coincidence; I say destiny | Report this post to moderator

I don't see the so-called "coincidences" as a problem. There is more than enough mention of fate and destiny in TOS for me to accept that the universe was working itself out as it should.

I mean, in the world of movies, it was MUCH more plausible than something like the symbiote just so happening to land right next to Peter Parker in Spider Man 3.

Spock was marooned on the ice planet, and the reason was spelled out very clearly. Kirk- same thing. It would be plausible that both would be within proximity of the Starfleet outpost. I mean, where else are they gonna go?

Plus, a lot of this has to rest on "fate" anyway. Here we are in a completely different universe or timeline, and yet somehow, the same crew manages to come together. In other words, if you are going to nitpick THAT much, then you have a problem with the entire premise of the movie and your time would be better spent watching something else.
