J.J. Abrams Says He Does Not Want to Approach Star Trek XII as a Remake of a TOS Episode, But Nothing is Off-Limits

By GustavoLeao / 13:02, 2 November 2009 / Star Trek: Nemesis

MTV posted a new interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and here are few excerpts.

"Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise."

"While I don't want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we've seen in the past... nothing is off limits in terms of what we're discussing," he said. "When Bob Orci and the others who know 'Trek' so well, the fun of working with them is they know this universe so deeply they're the ones who are always considering what it means to deal with the stuff in the past, so it'll be exciting."

The full interview is here.

I want Klingons, not some crappy Khan remake! Or give us Cardassians and Dominion.

Reed: What do you think of T'Pol, hmm? Do you think she's pretty? I think she's pretty.

Trip: Oh, God.

Reed: You ever noticed her bum?

Trip: What?

Reed: Her bum. She's got an awfully nice bum.

Trip: To Subcommander T'Pol. (toast)

Reed: Awfully nice.

Add to the canon, expand the experience | Report this post to moderator

While it's tempting to toss around ideas like making Khan to Kirk as The Joker is to The Batman, I rather they take this unique opportunities in making these films by adding to the canon in terms of experience, characters, etc. but also truly take us - the audience - to alien worlds.

Someone has posted a question on this board, asking that isn't AVATAR just ST:INS - while that may be true on the surface, what Cameron has done is to create an alien experience that entices us, draws us into a new realm of visuals, and introduces the age old question about human explorers and conquerors: advancement v. preservation, and what are the rights of those "aboriginals," etc.

STAR TREK movies have an opportunity to take us to truly alien lands and experiences never before seen in STAR TREK films that is organic in its visuals and sounds, and are embelished by a tale that the audience will enjoy. Same thing with LOTR films - they takes us - the audience - to truly foreign lands, yet tell stories that we can connect and relate to, that takes us away for a couple of hours from our lives.

And while I've posted here in the past that I like to see that character, or that experience in the next ST film - in the end, I rather they add to the canon from this point forward, to make their contributions to the canon, whether its original or adapting one of the many fantastic ST novels that are out there.

Did you also get the impression from the movie....? | Report this post to moderator

...that Kirk's fast promotion was due to Spock Prime's input (at best) or influence (at least)? This comes from the observational (God view) last scene of Spock Prime above the promotion ceremony.

The conversation behind closed doors could have been, "Admirals, you know I cannot tell you about the future, but I assure you promoting Kirk to command of the Enterprise would be the best decision of your career."

Like all of you, I simply cannot believe that Star Fleet would be "all caught up in the moment" and promote Kirk out of raw emotionalism or, worse, "stunt casting." That would be very un-Star Fleet like. I am not sure if the writers meant to imply Spock's involvement, but it sure would explain the surprise decision to place a young man with little experience in command of the flag ship of the Federation.

And by the way, I think it would be GREAT fun to take a person from TOS (Khan, Mudd, anyone really) and just do the OPPOSITE with them from the series. (Khan does the "right thing" in the end, Mudd is a champion of woman's rights, Talos IV tries to kill the Federation, etc.).

Come to think of it....a whole movie could be based on Pike getting all messed up and the whole "let's go back to Talos IV" turns into a justification for no-contact with them. BTW, THAT's how you get Shatner in....a Talos illusion to Spock Prime or SPock, or Kirk alt.

And in line with all that, I'm more than a little suspicious and curious why Paramount all of a sudden wraps up the Ellison lawsuit. Could the Guardian of Forever be being considered for XII? That's kind of the generic proto-matter as far as writing goes...you can do anything you want with that machine just by skipping your way into history.

My point is that I don't think J.J. should be fearful of something from the TOS series. He and the team have proven they can be playful and respectful and they have street cred in the bank with most fans and they should now spend it!

Well in the other time line, during this point he would have been serving on the Republic if memory serves correctly so none of the stuff from the series should really have any bearing on him yet. Though with this alternate time line running next to the other one, who knows.
