Rare Interview with Gene Roddenberry and Wiliam Shatner Online

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:04, 29 October 2009 / General Star Trek

According to Airlock Alpha, the Gene's Journal website features a hidden 1976 interview in which late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry talks to star William Shatner. Here are excerpts of their article.

The hidden interview was one Roddenberry did in July 1976 with Shatner called "Inside Star Trek" that was recorded at United Western Studios in Los Angeles.

In 1999, Columbia re-released "Inside Star Trek" as part of the two-CD "Star Trek: The Motion Picture 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition."

The two men talk about if there is any Shatner in Kirk or Kirk in Shatner, tensions between Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, why Roddenberry left in the 3rd season, and more.

In order to access the interview, visitors to the Gene's Journal site need to have a special Konami Code. It will play on both PCs and Macs (but not Linux), and once the code is entered, the screen goes dark, a retro radio appears, and Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the late "Star Trek" creator and his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry, delivers a special introductory message.

To find the interview, visit Gene's Journal at http://genesjournalcomic.com/, and using your cursor keys and keyboard, type in the following code that Roddenberry Productions provided to Airlock Alpha:

UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, ENTER.

32 years ago, I got this album and listened to it many times. It is insteresting and insightful in a way in none of the TV interviews on late night shows ever were. Very interesting and wonderful, especially now. Maybe you get enough Shatner? Well, you hear Gene talk about things here you don't hear anywhere else- but the most special pieces are De Kelley and Sarek. The one in-character interview that Gene does on the album is with Sarek (Mark Lenard) who plays it straight.

I long ago lost this album- probably went in a garage sale, or maybe I will find it at some point at my parents house, but when the TMP 20th anniversary CD came out, they attached this as a bonus. You can still get it that way too. Amazon has both CD and MP3 format:
CD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000FC5P/ref=dm_dp_cdp?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1256918066&sr=301-1

MP3: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Soundtrack-20th-Anniversary-Collectors/dp/B0013DCC7W/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1256918066&sr=301-1

If you have never heard this album, I suggest you get it. The fact that it comes with TMP doesn't suck either as that is the best soundtrack of all of them.

not very long, but very interesting none the less.

you hear a lot of stories told way after the fact. it is good to be able to hear them talking about this "in the moment". this is the kinda' "lost period" of trek in that there aren't a lot of interviews available from this time. you could argue that this is the most pivotal time for star trek. this is when the series grew it's popularity in syndication and the groundwork was being laid for "PHASE 2" which eventually became "THE MOTION PICTURE".

thanks for the link gustavo!
