Scott Bakula on Quantum Leap Movie Rumors, Star Trek Enterprise, New Star Trek Movie and Science Fiction Fans

Features

By GustavoLeao / 22:51, 22 September 2009 / Enterprise

MovieHole posted a new interview with Star Trek Enterprise star Scott Bakula (Captain Archer) and here are few excerpts.

Question: Now you're associated with two fairly iconic TV properties. There's a rumor that they're gonna try and reboot Quantum Leap.

Bakula
: That's always out there. [LAUGHTER] That rumor's always out there.

Question
: Would you like to see that happen?

Bakula
: I think so. I mean, it would be fun. I would always - you know, you talk about this stuff, and you'd have to see how it would manifest, you know? In terms of a script. And - I always have joked that they'll do it, but it won't be with me and Dean, you know? Because that's just the way that Hollywood is. If they did a feature, they would recast it. And make it better.

Question
: Like Star Trek.

Bakula
: Yeah, but, you know, I've been able - I've been so fortunate to work in different mediums, in different types of genres within all of those mediums, and work with some wonderful people. And that's what I hope to keep doing. And as I get older, I'm hoping to do more and more stage. And that's really where I started, and where I go back to.

Question
: How was it for you dealing with some of those hard core fans from both of those show? I mean, the Trekkies are a bunch unto themselves.

Bakula
: Yeah. Well, you know, science fiction fans, if they love you, they're - you've got 'em.

Question
: But God help you if they don't.

Bakula
: Well, they let you know, you know? And they don't really - you know, they really don't hang around if they don't like you, because they're just - if they've - if you're in, you know, then you're in forever. And they're demanding fans. They expect that you be honest in your science fiction, and correct in your science fiction. And they expect you to be available, and a part of the world of science fiction. And they claim you. So, there's kind of a responsibility about that. But I knew that. I knew when I took Enterprise that I was perpetuating that. But they're loyal, and they ask you to be really good. And they really watch. And, you know, for a performer, that's - you can't really ask for more than that. They're not casual. They're intent. And you better have - you better not screw up your facts, your logic, they'll ring you up on that one. And so - you know, that's who you work for. We work for our fans, and for an audience. And so I love them. They've been great to me.

The full interview is here.

Plus, Bakula talks to Collider in a new video interview, regarding the reference to "Admiral Archer" in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. Here is an excerpt.

Bakula : Totally surprised by that, I didn't see it coming. I bouguth a ticket and saw the movie with my boys and-it was so fast to be quite honest-I wasn't sure that I heard it, because there was so much going on in that movie-great movie indecently, I thought they did a wonderful job-but I thought "did he just talk about my dog dying?" And the you are on to something else.

Ranking Trek | Report this post to moderator
By: kc (Odo's file, contact) @ 09:42:01 on Sep 26, 2009 | Edit History (1)

I recently read comments by some posters stating Enterprise was a terrible show and it start me thinking of what I considered the best and worst Trek. To me, Enterprise wasn't a terrible show. It was a good show but didn't fit fans expectations of more 24th century or beyond Trek.

I am biased - it is my second favorite Trek show behind TOS. That may be a generational thing - I watched TOS first run as an elementary student so I prefer that era. (Although I like all the Trek shows and movies to one degree or another.)

If I was to rank the shows from best to worst they would be

1. TOS - the original pathfinder and really first successful space opera with recurring characters that wasn't a kid's show.

2. ENT - nice attempt to show the foundation's of the Trek mythos. Made some misteps and was hurt by creative fatigue and network politics but better than given credit when first aired.

3. TNG - in some ways the thinking man's Trek. Reason your way out of situations or tech your way out.

4. VOY - attempt to make Trek different - get it isolated like in TOS with the crew more out of touch. Nice Trek lite but franchise fatigue setting in.

5. DS9 - a great scifi show with compelling arc stories. Dark and emotional. In many ways the precusor to nuBSG. But bad Trek. What happened to Roddenberry's vision of an enlightened, evolving humanity - Kirk saying we are predators but we will say I will not kill today? (Although actually truer to man's fallen flawed nature.)

Anyway, that's how I see them with a brief explanation of my ranking.

The actor v. the character | Report this post to moderator
By: StillKirok (Odo's file, contact) @ 05:34:37 on Sep 24, 2009

Enterprise was a terrible show. It didn't fit at all within the Trek canon, it was created and written by bumbling idiots, and the results showed.

But BAKULA was NEVER the issue. The character wasn't all that great, but I've always been a fan of the actor. I WISH there could be more Quantum Leap if only to rectify THAT ending.

For whatever reason, I recently saw The Informant, and felt that the movie was simply BETTER when Bakula was on screen. He doesn't get enough work or credit for his talent.

And no, if they recast QL they would NOT make it better. Bakula and Stockwell can't be replaced. They can be recast, but as is the case with the new Trek, no matter how good the new actors are, no one will forget the originals.

I would love to see a QL reunion. Not on the big screen, but a TV movie, with the original cast and writers.

Nice Interview - he's always honest and always a gentleman in his comments.
And.seeing Enterprise now for the umpteenth time on the SCI-FI Channel... oops I mean, CYFY or SYFI or SYFY :)
I almost hate to admit that I think that was a pretty good show all in all (except for the meatball ending in the last episode which sucked).
Bacula was good there as he was also in QL - my opinions at least.

The Whole Dog Reference | Report this post to moderator

"...great movie indecently..."

What was indecent about it? :)

I didn't really like the reference to Archer because most people would assume it was Jonathan Scotty was referring to, and that's not too likely. (I know, anything's possible in Sci-Fi; longevity, time travel, suspended animation etc.) I'd assume it was his son or grandson and that Jonathan's love of beagles was passed on to future generations.

The greatest Captain? Not really.

A cool, cool guy? Yessir.

PS: Watching some of those ENT reruns.. and there are times I really liked Archer.
