Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:02, 14 January 2009 / People

According to the Associated Press, actor Ricardo Montalban has died. He was 88.

Montalban played one of Star Trek greatest villains, Khan Noonien Singh, in the first season TOS episode "Space Seed".

Khan was a superhuman tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived in 2267 by the crew of the Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled to a harsh world to create a new civilization with his people. The character returns in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed", in which Khan escapes his imprisonment and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk.

From 1977 to 1984 Montalban starred as Mr. Roarke in the television series Fantasy Island. He won an Emmy Award in 1978, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1993.

The original report can be found here.

This is really bad news, he was a truly great actor, probably the best actor to appear in Star Trek, without doubt the greatest villain role, instantly recognizable and underrated a natural born talent, this is a huge loss to the entertainment world.

GARAK: What is it?

QUARK: A human drink. It's called root

beer.

GARAK: I don't know...

QUARK: Go ahead. Aren't you just a

little bit curious?

QUARK: What do you think?

GARAK: It's vile!!!

QUARK: I know. It's so bubbly and

cloying and happy.

GARAK: Just like the Federation.

QUARK: But you know what's really

frightening? If you drink enough

of it, you start to like it.

GARAK: It's insidious.

QUARK: Just like the Federation.

even in books... | Report this post to moderator

so powerful was the impression he made that even in the three books which feature him, KNS's words burn into your eyes and ears with Montalban's voice.

it always amazes me how Trek in general has had superb guest stars - ds 9 in particular. from Montalban to Andrew Robinson to Jeffery Combs to Brock Peters, they have truly enhanced the experience and expanded the Trek universe with incredibly compelling break-away characters who have left such a mark on me and my trek viewing experiences that it's hard to think of some of them as 'guests' on the shows.

I think it may be hard for non trek fans to see just how good a movie ST2 is. It is one of my all time favorite. the beauty of it is in its simplicity and basic approach. I had seen the movie countless times and still never realized until the dvd commentary that kirk and kahn never share the screen (aside from when we see kahn over kirk's shoulder on the enterprise viewscreen).

that being said... it is hard to believe that someone who I identify so much with star trek was only in what amounts to 2 episodes. That speaks volumes about the character and the job that Ricardo Montalban did with it.

"We offered the world ORDER!"

His character, and portrayal, is the one Trek movie villain that all others should hope to be as good as.

He was in one of my favorite war movies - Battleground. It's often compared to Band of Brothers. You should check it out.

He'll be missed.
