J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci on Revitalizing Star Trek for New Fans

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:15, 5 December 2008 / Feature Films

LA Times posted an article on the current state of the science fiction genre, with quotes by William Shatner, J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Ronald D. Moore. Here are few excerpts of the article.

"Science fiction should be about ideas and what it means to be human, it should always be about the new and the challenging" Shatner said "‘Star Trek' connected with so many people for so long, and ‘Star Wars' is the same way. There's a thrill for fans to see the heroes they know."

"These are people who really care about these characters and these stories and the details." Abrams said "But I have to tell you, I'm not going to make a movie that tries to make every hard-core Trekker happy, because it's not possible. I'm making a movie for fans of movies. I want it to be an adventure and fun and sexy and scary and epic and intimate and everything. I feel a great responsibility to these characters and everything that has come before, but I need to make a film that is not paralyzed by all of that."

"We're trying to do something in the middle, something that holds on to everything that makes ‘Star Trek' what it is but also take it into a new place." Orci said "One thing about the original show was its inherent optimism, and we very much wanted that in this movie. This is a future you would want to live in. And we hope it's a future people want to watch."

Felicity was beloved by many, especially in the early days when JJ was involved more. I never watched it, but many did.

LOST is one of the best shows on TV - smart, exciting, and deeply rooted in science and philosophy.

JJ has not bee LYING to you. He doesn't know you. I'm sure both camps have spun a little.. but no more than Roddenberry or Berman ever did.

The Enterprise sets are the first thing I've seen that are really different.. and i like them.. (And honestly, they're not that off from TMP.)

The costumes? Really? REALLY? That's one of your big sticking points?

Dude, the former powers that be couldn't even decide when Picard lost his hair. Its not that important.

I think its pathetic that some fans of Star Trek, which is a vision of the future where there is no PREJUDICE, HATRED, or poverty, insist on being prejudice towards and hating J.J. Abrams, without any evidence, it only emphasizes the importance of Star Trek in our culture. Perhaps one day we won't sit around in futile rage saying this movie will suck because Shatner is not in it...oh dare to dream.

J.J. Abrams seems to keep bracing fans of ClassicTrek for his new movie. Don't really understand why the need to do so. If it is a good movie, Trek fans will embrace it. If it leaves a sour taste in the mouths of ClassicTrek fans, well, then I guess that is that. I just hate to think why he thinks he NEEDS to keep reminding us it is not a film made for ClassicTrek fans but a movie for 'fans of movies.' It is comments like these that make me wonder about the direction of this movie. If he would just shut up, I would feel better about it.

Also, that bastard Orci.... Now that is someone who needs to keep their mouth shut and pen away from paper.

In other words, change it. Yes, I can hear you now... change is good. Yes, I agree (to an extent). But only GOOD CHANGE is GOOD. Not all change is good. It has been my movie watcher's experience that Orci and Kurtzman lie to the fan base repeatedly until the movie comes out. Why? Well, if the fan base knew what was changed about a project they (O&K) were working on, they might not go and see it. That would cost the studio money. Orci and Kurtzman would not be hired to write too many more Hollywood remake scripts. They are PR'ing for their own necks. They want to keep working in HollyWoodLand.

Now all this said. Here is my problem:
J.J. needs to shut up about not making this movie for the ClassicTrek fans. If he does, all this doubt will fade away for the most part.

Orci and Kurtzman lie to the fan base of whatever franchise they are working on. You will see. They should write original scripts. Leave franchises alone

First he licks the fan's asses, and now he kicks them in their asses. I wish he would make his mind up.
