Karl Urban on New Trek Movie Budget and Working with Quinto and Nimoy

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:40, 1 December 2008 / Feature Films

2news.co.nz posted a new video interview with Star Trek actor Karl Urban, the new McCoy, and here are excerpts courtesy of TrekMovie.com

"This is going to be wicked. They are throwing more money at this thing than probably the last five [Star Trek] films combined" Urban said about the new Trek movie.

Regarding working with Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, the two Spocks, he said "It was freaky working with him. It was like watching an original episode and being face to face with Leonard Nimoy as Spock. I actually got to see Leonard doing his very first day of putting on the ears and the eyebrows and becoming Spock after 17 years and it was one of those iconic pop moments."

You can watch the full video interview at TrekMovie.

Just to be a nitpicking ass, but according to Urban, that would make the budget of "Star Trek" somewhere north of $250 million. ;)

Out of all the things I am looking forward to, with this movie, the one thing I'm REALLY looking forward to is seeing Karl Urban's performance as Dr McCoy.

That small snippet we see of him in the trailer is pure and utter classic McCoy. His tone of voice, his mannerisms, the way he has his right eyebrow cocked up, that intense, almost insane look he has in his eyes, he has it completely nailed.

There was so much passion in Deforest Kelley performance, and he was so convincing, that I really could believe he was a real doctor, and it was the one character I really connected to. And I can see the same in Karl Urbans delivery and I really honestly hope that he and his character don't take a back seat behind Kirk and Spock. I'd like to see that long-time friendship of Kirk and McCoy get the same treatment as it did in the series, like those moments when McCoy would come into the Kirk's quarters and share a drink. A classic moment that comes to mind is in The Corbomite Manuever, the interaction between the two was very natural. I'm looking forward to seeing something similar in this movie.

Using Gabriel Koerner's ENTERPRISE for Interview | Report this post to moderator

Look at that image of the ENTERPRISE behind Urban. That's Gabriel Koerner's re-designed version they are using for the interview on NZ's Channel 3. LOL. Someone in Paramount PR/Marketing did not do their job to get an image for them from the movie.

He talked about working with Quinto as Spock and how he was "like Leonard Nimoy."
