Ricky Gervais Turned Down Role in New Star Trek Movie

Features

By GustavoLeao / 22:48, 21 September 2008 / Feature Films

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly comedian Ricky Gervais (Extras) talked about being picky about the projects he takes, he revealed that director J.J. Abrams approached him about a role in the new Star Trek film and he turned down the role. He didn't reveal what role he was approached for but TrekMovie have speculated that it was Scotty, which went to Simon Pegg.

"I was never a big fan, so I would've felt guilty taking the part just to be in a blockbuster. To what? Boost my profile? [...] I'm not trying to be a film star. I don't care  if I never do another film again. I can create my own material and I've got to remember that. As exciting as it is to be a film star, it means nothing to me." he said.

The full interview is here.

Ricky Gervais opens himself up to criticism for the roles he does decide to take. Take that "Ghost Dad" movie. Now granted just because he is in it, I will give it a go but in every other way, it looks really dumb. Why would he pick that over star trek?

I'm SO sad that he's not playing Scotty... Wow, the guy off of the Brit "The Office" has really let me down... NOT!!!

Who the hell is this guy, and why should we care? I saw him do stand-up once and... well, I moaned more than I laughed; and when I laughed it was just charity...

And all that shit he said about not caring if he ever makes another movie... WOW!!! That's some smart promotion.

Picture this... I go into a job interview, they start asking questions, and I say "You know, I don't really wanna work. I don't care if I ever get a job again."

I'm kind of tired of every tid-bit of trivia concerning this new "Star Trek" film. There's little real info, but we get scraps like this, and who cares?

Ya' know what, I turned down the roll of 13th repair man's assistant in engineering on the USS Titanic on the new Trek Movie... (no, not really..)

Sorry... just venting

Pegg looks more like Doohan.

Would have been a perfect Scotty | Report this post to moderator

Not only does he look like James Doohan, but he's also about the right age, considering that Doohan was 46 when TOS started, and most reference works say Scotty was in his 40s when he joined the Enterprise.

He would have been a perfect choice.

So is everyone "speculating" that he was offered the role to play Scottie just because he is British? That is pretty naieve considering his physical build and age don't fit the role at all, and his current accent is irrelevant because those can be faked. Did anyone ever think that maybe he was offered a minor role somewhere else in the cast, a la Tyler Perry? I mean, c'mon...

Blogger Speculation | Report this post to moderator

As Chris Doohan notes about Gervais, "At 46, he would have been way too old to play Scotty". Gervais is 9 years older than Simon Pegg.

The Star Trek XI Blog speculates that Gervais was offered a cameo role.
