Simon Pegg Says New Movie Will Honor the Star Trek Rules

Features

By GustavoLeao / 13:42, 30 August 2008 / Feature Films

National Post posted a new interview with Star Trek actor Simon Pegg, the new Scotty. Here are few excerpts.

Pegg say that the film would honor the ‘Star Trek rules,' saying "We pay tribute to that world. It's proper to the pantheon, but J. J. [Abrams] kept reminding us this is not a parody of any kind. We were all keen to avoid playing the actors from the old series, but instead play our characters as we saw fit."

According to the article, the cast feels "a responsibility and an anticipation" to what the reaction of the movie will be, Pegg admits. But he's also resigned to the fact they won't please everybody. Especially, according to the article, persnickety Star Trek fans who have quite a movie and TV universe to get finicky about.

"We pay tribute to that world.

I hope the world they pay tribute to is the Star Trek I've battled at times to reveal these last eight or so years. I hope the Star Trek they unveil to us and to a new generation is the world of Kennedy and of Obama, the world of Roddenberry and of Martin Luther King. In other words, the world of Star Trek!

I pray the cash cow they will soon hype will enjoin 1966 to 2009 and reflect the promise we, AS A PLANET, can still achieve. This isn't a Liberal hope, this isn't a radical hope. This isn't a David Brooks NY Op-Ed hope, my life tells me this is a COMMON hope!

The Reagan era produced the greatest Star Trek movie ever: TWOK. Let us now finally believe in the next improbable connection with history. And let us believe in our future. Whether it's real or Star Trek, history has proven they conspire to collide. The time is now!

Thank you, my fellow UFP citizens!!

I ain't jokin'.

Pegg say that the film would honor the 'Star Trek rules'

That meaning of "Star Trek rules" is taken out of its original context: After mention of TOS and TNG, the Post reporter says, "The Star Trek franchise also had three other spin-off shows. In the new movie, the first Star Trek rules, though". Which is just to say that the new movie is mostly a TOS story, rather than TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT.

It's the Post reporter, not Pegg, who refers to Trek fans as "persnickety" and "finicky". These terms, as part of a general statement, categorize the moderate fan with the fanatics -- so let's not put words in Pegg's mouth to make it seem as though he shares the opinion of some mindless slave to angst.

So far, Pegg and the other ST:XI cast have been thoughtful, feeling "a responsibility and an anticipation" to what the reaction of the movie will be.

This article quotes Pegg as saying the movie is "an irony-free zone", though he was heard to say that "There's a lot of little ironies in there that you'll pick up on if you know the series, and you know the mythology". Pegg might be a little fast and loose with his use of "irony". After reading the script, Nimoy remarked on how "the writers really have done a great deal of homework", which floats Pegg's "lots of little ironies" comment.

Everything quoted from the cast and crew, including Pegg, indicates the movie does honor existing Star Trek material, even in its overall look-and-feel, as Orci has spoken of "how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new."
