William Shatner Hopes J.J. Abrams is Capable of Reigniting the Franchise, Says His Latest Star Trek Novel May Be His Last

Features

By GustavoLeao / 12:30, 8 April 2008 / Feature Films

AOL Television posted an exclusive interview with Star Trek star William Shatner in which he once again claims he is not involved with the new Star Trek movie. Here are few excerpts

What's your involvement with J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' movie?
Shatner : Everybody knows more about it than I. I don't even know whether they finished shooting or not. I've actually had nothing to do with it. It's a shame, and I would have liked to have been a part of it, but the people doing it, for some reason or other, thought otherwise, and so I'm not.

Your most recent 'Star Trek' novel, 'Collision Course,' has a young James T. Kirk storyline. Will you be writing more 'Trek' novels?

Shatner : I don't think so. The publishing company was very negligent on this last novel. I think they may have given up on it, so I would think that would be the last novel from me. Whether J.J. Abrams is capable of reigniting the franchise remains to be seen, and if he does, then perchance it won't be the last.

Won't the Shatner stuff die like his character did? | Report this post to moderator

Shatner's last book was horrid, violates continuity in ways that Abrams couldn't do in his wildest dreams (Kirk met Spock in a strip club?!), and shows that Shatner has gone so far into self-parody that that's all he has left.

This is why the studio was against him overseeing-err, "writing" another book. The novels are not considered canon by Paramount, and having so many of them around clouds the established universe with stuff that the studio doesnt want to HAVE to honor.

Quote:
[Shatner] probably shouldn't have turned down the cameo role [he was] offered or let them kill [him] off over a decade ago.

On (and Off) the Road Again... | Report this post to moderator

William Shatner has been joined by George Takei as a Starfleet grad who fancies himself a singer: The debut of Secret Talents of the Stars, April 8th on CBS, featured Takei's version of On the Road Again. SF Universe describes the listener experience as "quite painful."

Truly painful was the car crash at the filming site of JJ Abrams' Star Trek, reported by ABC23 in Bakersfield, California: "The CHP said the site manager tried to turn onto a road where filming was set to take place, but crossed in front of oncoming traffic and hit a truck. The driver of the truck and passenger in the car were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The crash did not disrupt filming."

In another Bakersfield report, KGET TV quotes Paramount producer Jeffery Chernoz: "We wanted something that looked like Iowa, and we also wanted to stay close to Los Angeles. So, we came out here and scouted and realized that we can kind of make Iowa out of Bakersfield."

Bill Shatner, Captain of the Enterprise | Report this post to moderator

I always good to see Bill back on the captain's chair - nice photo of him at Star Trek The Tour.

I am a big fan of the Shatnerverse books. I really love the Shatner / Reeves-Stevens novels, so I really hope that Collision Course, which was a decent prequel book and a good read, will not be Shatner's last Star Trek novel.

...Says His Latest Star Trek Novel was a Flop

Shatner says nothing of the sort. He says, "The publishing company was very negligent on this last novel."

This isn't the first time Shatner has mentioned how TPTB have been uncooperative toward Star Trek: Academy - Collision Course. Shatner has mentioned this on LiveVideo ShatnerVision, and also during a PalTalk webcast interview in which he says the studio didn't want him to write the latest novel.

The new Trek will be stronger without him.
