Review by Jeff Ayers

From the opening page and the Dramatis Personae, you know that Day of the Vipers will be a treat.  Fans of Deep Space Nine are quite familiar with the religious beliefs of the Bajorans, but the Cardassians are another matter.  Do they even have spiritual beliefs?

The first book in the Terok Nor trilogy begins on day zero of the occupation when a Cardassian vessel stumbles upon the remains of a Bajoran ship in deep space.  They offer to bring the bodies home and the Kai agrees.  Soon they realize that their spiritual beliefs are quite similar, and that the Cardassians (of the Oralian faith) and the followers of the Prophets practice several rituals that are nearly identical.  Soon a treaty puts the Cardassians on Bajor for raw materials and religious study.  But what seems innocent initially becomes a horrifying plan to save a dying Cardassia by forcibly occupying Bajor.

Of course, we already know what ultimately happens, and therein lies the beauty of this story. The carefully orchestrated campaign plays out over a number of years, and is implemented in such small increments that by the time the occupation is official, the Bajorans have no idea what just happened.  That is way more satisfying than a slam bang forced subjugation. The characters are strong, particularly Darrah, the peace officer wanting to do what is best for his family even though it could force them away.  James Swallow's story in Skys the Limit was terrific, and he continues his streak of amazing writing and great storytelling.  Over 500 pages in small print, this ranks as one of the longest Star Trek novels to date and yet never feels long.  I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy.
