The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine, out in the UK and US, features a new interview with Star Trek Voyager star Kate Mulgrew. Here are few excerpts.
According to Mulgrew, when actress Genevieve Bujold quit the role of Captain Nicole Janeway, "They got a soldier."
Actually, the character's original name was Elizabeth Janeway, which was changed for legal reasons to Captain Nicole Janeway, as explained by Jeri Taylor to a 1995 issue of Cinefatastique : "There is a prominent Elizabeth Janeway, and we're not allowed to use names of prominent people because it can be sticky, although we heard sort of secondhand that Elizabeth Janeway was flattered about it. It then changed again to Nicole at Genevieve Bujold's request, because that is in fact her given name and she wanted that. For two days it was Nicole Janeway (then Bujold left during the second day of filming; when she left, the name Nicole was abandoned) and then when Kate came on board, it was Kathryn - in fact the name we'd already chosen even before Kate was cast in the role."
You can see the footage of Bujold as Nicole Janeway shot for the pilot episode on YouTube.
"It was difficult in the first couple of seasons, but when the [viewing] numbers proved to be stable, they let me take wing. There's very little I would change, looking back" says Mulgrew.
"I learned discipline, constitutionally and otherwise," she explains about her seven years as Captain (now Admiral) Janeway "I learned to respect and support my colleagues. I learned that preparation and reliability are key. But mostly I learned my own strength, which wasn't something I was aware of previously. There's nothing harder than working 18 hours a day when you're raising children. I'm proud of doing that."
"Voyager is a lot like Next Gen. We were the two most successful ones. Two captains in peril at every turn. We were lost in space on a ship, trying to find our way home, it was a wonderful way to capture the imagination. It had all the key elements of drama." she said
