Star Trek Movie Plot Rumors, Film Takes Place in an Alternative Timeline (Spoilers)

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:55, 30 August 2007 / Feature Films

AICN posted plot rumors for director/producer J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie. Beware of spoilers.

According to "Moriaty", the film may involve Romulans going back in time to kill off James T. Kirk and change history. The older Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, goes back in time too and does what he can to fix the timeline.

"Picture an incident that throws a group of Romulans back in time." wrote "Moriaty" "Picture that group of Romulans figuring out where they are in the timeline, then deciding to take advantage of the accident to kill someone's father, to erase them from the timeline before they exist, thereby changing all of the TREK universe as a result. Who would you erase? Whose erasure would leave the biggest hole in the TREK universe is the question you should be asking." The answer : James T. Kirk, according to the site.

"Moriarty" says Leonard Nimoy is the star of the movie. A lot of this movie is about Spock. Nimoy-aged Spock, mind you.

According to AICN "the plan is to use this second timeline as a way of rebooting without erasing or ignoring canon. These new voyages of the ENTERPRISE, they're taking place in whatever timeline starts with this story."

"Moriaty" then explains that the movie is a reboot in this new alternative timeline, saying "You can introduce these Universe2 versions of classic TREK events and characters, and you can play with the audience's expectation. Things have changed. Some things play out the way you expect... some don't. It's basically the same solution Marvel Comics has in terms of publishing, the way they use their ULTIMATES line to reboot continuity."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

If the plot of this movie is the Romulans trying to change history by killing Kirk and that this movie is the first in a new timeline/canon series...that suggests to me that the Romulans succeed in their mission.

Perhaps the reason that Kirk hasn't been cast yet is because he is not going to be a part of the new timeline.

Perhaps Shatner doesn't have a part in the movie not because he died in Generations but because he's been erased from history.

I'm really starting to wonder if this is the springboard for a new captain...

I'm just hoping that this is just false rumour. The last thing we need is yet another time travel / alternate universe story. Sounds like a combo of ' First Contact' and 'Trials and Tribbelations' to me! Star Trek is about ' seeking out new life and civilizations' . The last time the movies did that was in the FIRST one!! Please utilise the best of the characters, and give us something NEW and fresh!

We get excited about how JJ Abrams is bringing "fresh ideas" to the franchise, and yet, at it's heart, is basically a rehash of First Contact! I mean come ON!

I hate to admit it, but I kinda like it.

I still want Shatner, but I kinda dig this.

A little imaginative prose on a webpage, a lot of tilt from believers. Bloggers surely taste the effect their word has on fan emotions. Journalists-cum-vampires to our impatient curiosity and fear of irreversible change. ;-)

Fact or not, there's nothing alarming in the AICN article. There are umpteen timelines in our universe, and each of them is the "correct" one. Each is a nest for countless tales of the human condition. I'll grade Abrams on his storytelling, measured on a TOS scale.

As Nimoy told fans in Vegas, "I say that they have hired a very talented director and very talented writers, and you have to turn them loose and let them make their movie. Okay? I have faith in these people ... I think they're going to invigorate the franchise. I really do, I believe that."

still don't understand why ANYONE would say Trek needs a reboot? WHY? How does rehashing TOS make things "all better"?

I agree with you but the reason for the 'reboot' is go back to what is more popular globally; to start from the beginning without all the clutter of canon. And that still is the Kirk-Spock Star Trek. It is a big risk for sure. But what's the alternative? Yet another ship with another crew? The TNG crew failed to spark up the big screen. No one outside of Trek fans knows a damn thing about DS9, VOY, and ENT. It hasn't worked out in that last 10+ years.

An alternate time line movie is just another silly idea floating around.

Agreed and here's hoping that it's just a rumour.

The mission is not the MOST important thing. Its the social relevance that counts, the exploration of the human condition, the heart of the movie, that really matters.

But even so, the mission is the hook that is going to attract people, or not, because I think this "they wanna kill Kirk" idea is NOT very interesting for people who aren't fans of the Trek universe to begin with.

In fact I think it sounds completely irrelevant to most people. Its not a serious issue, or an important enough topics for anyone but geeks who are glued to Trek (like myself).

Oh god, could it be true? | Report this post to moderator
By: the quickening (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:29:53 on Aug 31, 2007

I want to have some fun!

Seeing that I am not a big fan of JJ Abrams, and knowing the penchant for Hollywood doing shoddy work and follow-ups, sequels, prequels, remakes just to play it safe--meaning rehashing ideas just to make easy money, anything, even something as silly as this idea for the movie--could be true.

What concerns me is some info that has already come out making it possible that there maybe something to this.

For example:

1) JJ Abrams SUPERMAN script, which was viewed as too far out and preposterous--which this AICNs TREK story premise definitely sounds like.

2) The writers reported that Nimoy was essential for the making of the movie--writing it even before he had agreed to appear in it--makes it possible that old/Spock is more necessary to this story than we were lead to believe. Couple this with the fact the writers are fans of TNG as well--and I have heard no TNG elements mentioned so far with this production--I can see the dots pointing to the Romulan/TNGs unification connection and Spock's involvement with Romulans in the AICN rumor, making it believable.

3) Knowing how Hollywood thinks, knowing how commercial this movie must be to make back it's investment, I can see the studio and producers selecting a time travel premise--and playing it safe--, especially when you look at the success of the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies, THE TERMINATOR movies, and two of the most successful TREK films: THE VOYAGE HOME and FIRST CONTACT. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and I fear the possibilities are there for a time-travel story to be highly possible.

4) I am concerned Abrams and Paramount, despite what they are saying about this film being aimed at the general audience, as well as fans, are looking at the fan base way too much. Why write Nimoy in this film? Why even think about putting Shatner in this film? Why allow this swelling of controversy regarding Shatner placement in it. Just announce you can't find a way and to put him in and stop it now--fear of Trek fan reaction perhaps? Their actions ARE suggesting a fandom film, slightly legitimizing this silly concept.

5) Creating an alternate timeline and therefore preserving canon is also suggestive of thinking about the fans and not the general public.

6) AICN is a rumor-mill for sure, but they are NOT always wrong.

I'm not suggesting there is ANY truth to this rumor, only that, given Hollywood--the constant lousy genre films that town continues to churn out, nothing would surprise me.

I already saw First Contact. I actually own it. I don't need to see it remade with TOS characters and Romulans digitally entered in.

Nimoy's great, but at his age, I hardly can see him carrying an entire hundred million dollar scifi action flick on his shoulders.

Plus, this flies right in the face of much of what we've been told by the production staff and actors. To top it all off, the writer of the "article" is speculating.

I refuse to believe this is the film. For one, its a terrible idea. If you have ANY gimmicks (time travel, alternate universes) you are simply going to turn off all those "new fans" and "general audiences" that you hope to attract.

Plus, they just ripped off the "Trouble with Tribbles" plot.

What they need to do is find a reason to return to the franchise, besides making money.

While I think this would create a wonderful FILM, and possibly my favorite aside from STII, I want to point out what it would cost us:

THE REST OF THE FRANCHISE!

With a rebooted 23rd Century, TNG-DS9-VOY all go away!
More painfully to some: ENT would still be canon, since history was altered AFTER that show.

While there's something moving in seeing "our Spock" fade away at the end as the universe is rebooted into the new from-scratch JJ Abrams 23rd Century Trek-verse...

I would truly regret losing the rest of Star Trek for it.

They will probably do it VERY well, and I'm excited to hear about this plan... but I'd still prefer a "prequel".

Why does Star Trek fans have such closed minds?
I just firmly believe that we just love to bitch about things.
Trek desperately needs a reboot and I find this to be a clever way of doing it. It maintains one timeline and starts a new one.

Keep an open mind. Don't dump on them yet. Sheesh.

I have it on good authority that old_spock actually doesn't go back in time, but projects himself (sort of a shadow version of himself) to young Spock to actually save the day.

When this fails, old-Spock goes further back, about 150 years further back, and somehow alters some humans to become enhanced. These humans are then called the Suliban. That's right old-Spock becomes Future Guy.

Spock we'll need to get something out of it for himself, too. He could save Kirk in the 24th Century and alter the timeline from that point forward. That could mean that the Enterprise D would be saved and that Star trek Nemesis never happened!

I have to say, with regret, that I am with you on this one ENSIGN RO. By the way, I had a crush on her. She seemed so fricking Kinky with those eyebrows and that little mole on her cheek...

Well..anyway. I look at this two ways. I will not go all the way and say "oh no, not another time travel story". Some of the best STAR TREK stories have something to do with TIME TRAVEL.

1. City On The Edge of Forever
2. The Visitor
3. Yesterday's Enterprise
4. First Contact
5. The Voyage Home
6. The Inner Light
7. QPID (yeah..a stretch with that one)

And those are the ones I can think of titles for. The one with SISKO as a writer is the one I can't think of but really like..Benny Russel.

You get my point. Most of you consider FIRST CONTACT the best of TNG, I feel it is GENERATIONS. But in both cases TIME TRAVEL is used. And VOYAGE HOME is the movie that most NON-fans will mention...'the one where they saved the whales"...

Having said that I do have problems with this plot. To me it is just a variation of Roddeberry's idea, but instead of JKF it is Kirk they want to save/kill (same thing).

But we are more than a year or so away. I am sure that JJ and his team could be floating trial balloons...

So...yes...even I am a bit worried where this is headed. But someone has to remain calm during these times.

I must quote from MY favorite TNG movie now...GENERATIONS

"They same time is the fire in which we burn"..let us hope that Tolian Soran's words are not forgotten by JJ and company...
