Who is guessing that the Okuda's changed the James R Kirk in the Gary Mitchell pilot to James T Kirk? Anyone, anyone?
I can't believe the range of comments on this board regarding the remastered Star Trek. They run the gamut from, "I hate it, they shouldn't have messed with it," to, "Freakin' awesome! This is gonna rock!"
Reality, as someone once said, is probably somewhere in the middle. As a CGI artist, video editor, photographer and producer myself, I have often wondered why the money wasn't spent on upgrading the SFX for Trek. Now that I see the final product, I can honestly say that it makes the original look better.
I don't think the ship has to be ultra-detailed or do barrel rolls or look all greeble-fied...it looks just fine the way it is, with the *subtle* weathering (note to Ed Miarecki - this is the way it should be done). I'm building a CGI Enterprise myself in Cinema 4D, and I'm having to work hard to balance the "realism" with the "fantasy." Also, kudos to Mike and Denise Okuda for even going so far as to include the original film grain on the new efx.
Folks, if you're a fan of Trek (not just the visuals, but the stories and the characters), then you'll appreciate this new effort. It won't please everyone, but if it pleases most, it'll be a good indicator of how well JJ Abrams' movie will do...and whether there's a market out there for new Trek on TV. Don't trash the effort just because you think it's sacred, or that the French horns in the theme aren't exactly the same, or the ship doesn't have rivets or whatever. Enjoy it for what it is - Star Trek.

As excited as I am about TOS being remastered, I have to say I was disappointed by the Romulan Bird of Prey in the trailer. The view from astern revealed that the VFX artists have *not* added impulse engines or closed up those gaping warp nacelles. I mean, I wasn't expecting all-new storyboarded starship maneuvers, but sheesh, why not *detail* the CGI ship like it's supposed to be? Hope they don't make that same omission with the Klingon battle cruiser.

I admit I've never been able to watch the entire TOS -- in fact I've ever only watched a few complete episodes as a child, in the 1980s -- which goes a long way to explain why I've never called myself a "Trek fan". But now having seen this trailer I think I will be able to enjoy the story without being distracted by the odd special effects. I've no idea if this will end up on Taiwanese cable, but I'll get the DVDs if I have to.
Dammit, Jim, I'm FIFTY. I remember watching the original Trek around our black and white TV in 1966, pre internet, pre computers, pre color TV, pre-just about everything. I was ten then (do the math) and my mother made me go to bed early and then got me up to watch the show because I *had* to get my sleep. Heck, who could sleep when STAR TREK was gonna be on?
I'm feeling that way again! It's wonderful. I have my DirecTivo set to record "Balance of Terror" next Monday morning at 12:05 am on KNBC4 in LA.
But I have no one to share my enthusiasm with! Everyone my age would think I'm a nut. :=(
At least I have you fine folks here. You know what it's like to hear that old theme in new stereo in your headphones and have chills go up and down your spine. You know what it's like to go "OH YEAH!" when you see the new Enterprise sailing majestically over a photorealistic Earth! You get it when Kirk kicks ass, gets the girl and saves the ship again.
This is gonna be good, all over again!

Does anyone else think that this would be vastly improved with the Orchestra behind the scenes piece taken out (or at least a lot shorter). It seems to break the rest of the tempo, given the upbeat soundtrack to the rest of the clip.
Also- "The Ship Hits The Fans" -- Puh-leeze! Can we get like a group of 10 non-basemented fans to review these for Paramount to avoid a craptastic lines like that one?

That shot of the ship firing photon torpeados seems to actually be the one of it firing "phasers" from Balence of Terror, since we know that's the episode that's coming up.
Does this mean Trek Remastered will retain all of the original version's inconsistencies in regards to the appearence of the ship's weapons? I had figured with Mike Okuda on board they would have fixed that.
I've looked at the comparisons at VRRRM.com - is it just me, or do the old effects always look something in between better or the same? I miss the bright, NASA-like surface of the Enterprise and some surface definition, as well as some colored stars in the background. The model shots look more alive to me. However, it's clear the old ones wouldn't have looked too good in HD.
I'm reserving final judgment, of course.
Sweet god I had chills running down my back - god knows if or when this'll make it to Australia but i can't wait!!!

EXCLUSIVE Star Trek "Mirror, Mirror" Action Figure Set
From 2:30 onward, that part really got me pumped about Star Trek like I haven't been in a long time. I think its the music they used, anyone know if thats original or from something?

I just had a trekgasm.
I can't wait for Saturday night. This really is a fantastic gift back to the fans, and makes up for a lot of short shrift over the past several years.
Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, so I'll be very brief. But one thing hit me watching this trailer. It was DYNAMIC. Now, I'm sure that much of it had to do with the music bed and the editing and just my overall excitement of watching my childhood heroes charging across the screen again, young and at the peak of their game. But as the last montage flashed by (before the execrable 'ship hits the fans' line) I couldn't help but reflect on how much panache and joie de vivre TOS demonstrates in just these couple of minutes...more, even, than most of TNG and DS9, and a ridiculous amount more than VOY and ENT.
I've seen all these episodes countless times. But I am eager to watch them again, not just to see how spiffy they are now that they've been cleaned up, with sparkling new visuals and sound...but because they're FUN. Enterprise? Voyager? Not fun. Not at all. Like someone sucking the air out of a room. But Star Trek...no bloody subtitled version...I can't wait to see young Mark Lenard standing on the bridge of his warbird...for Sulu to go swashbuckling down the hall, the madman Decker facing down the Planetkiller, Scotty fighting with Klingons, Scotty DRINKING with Klingons...and my beloved Dr. McCoy sputtering next to Kirk's chair after another droll barb from Spock. It's a fabulous return to adventure, something that's been missing from the franchise for at least 15 years.

I notice that, in this trailer, Kirk says "Its mission" rather than "Its 5-year mission."
CBS Studios say they've fixed old technical problems in the opening montage.
"We didn't change anything, although we did update everything," David Rossi says. "All the star patterns that were in the original opening are exactly duplicated in the new opening. We smoothed out the motion of the Enterprise. It flies more dynamically now. It occupies real space. It doesn't look like a model anymore. So that's kind of the angle we took on it."
"The process that Dave just described is one particular shot where the Enterprise's flight path takes a couple of strange bumps to the left and to the right," adds Michael Okuda. "And there were artifacts of the visual-effects processes back then. And now CBS Digital is able to go in and essentially have an infinitely long track, so the perspective of the ship now is proper. It, as Dave says, occupies real space. It's a subtle change, but it just gives the ship more presence as it flies by you.
"Back in '64, when they shot the original opening elements, [or] '66, there was a physical limit to how far ... back you can get the camera [from the model]. So the perspective changes were limited by the physical length of the dolly track in the studio. What CBS Digital can do is, ... with the digital rendering, you can have your virtual camera infinitely far away and have the ship travel to inches from your nose. And by doing that, the perspective is ... proper. It's just as if the ship is really flying by you."

Since they remastered these in High Def, is it up to the local affiliates that are broadcasting the show to show them in high def or will they be on a Hi Def cable channel as well?
WOW! That got me excited (with the exception of "the Ship hits the fan - overused and annoying).
