Patrick Stewart on X-MEN 3 Role and Serious Plans for STAR TREK XI

Features

By GustavoLeao / 04:31, 2 December 2005 / Feature Films

Empire Online caught up with STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION star Patrick Stewart who talked a bit about Professor Xavier in upcoming X-MEN 3 movie.

"Well we lost two directors! But everything was fine when I left the set. I've finished my filming now and it's all looking great," he said

About his role in the new sequel, he said, "You'd need about an hour to hear all about it. There are going to be some changes. Professor X is now very, very startling, very surprising. It's all very exciting."

The original report can be found here.

Stewart also told UK's Teletext that plans are afoot to make another TNG feature film for the big screen, as revealed this week by SFX Magazine (story)

Despite plans at Paramount for a TREK prequel movie featuring an all-new cast -- currently titled STAR TREK: THE BEGINNING, Stewart said, "About four months ago at a meeting in Los Angeles the subject was raised quite seriously from a very interesting point of view. I have been saying for four years now that it's over. No fantasies about it coming back, the space suits have been hung up for good."

"But there are weighty people in Hollywood who are very interested in one more run around the holodeck. There are serious plans."

"I was told this may happen two or three years down the road, by which time I'll be able to sit again in the captain's chair, but then again, it's not all that far away and if I'm in good shape I'd love to do it."

Be honest with yourselves... Data, as posted before, is a huge issue to deal with.

Spiner makes a brutally old looking android now. That was the problem with casting a human as an android in the first place.

He gains an extra chin in every movie.

There are only 2 choices:

Leave Spiner out of the next movie or say they've created an "aging algorithim" or something, which would just make everyone go "oh, please".

Data looked bizarre in Nemesis when you look back at the history of his look throughout TNG.

He didn't have the respect for himself to go for a few rounds in the sauna before filming... lose that water weight in the face.

Well, let's face it, TPTB don't want to make a new trek with an unrecognizable cast of characters. That's probably why the script by BAND OF BROTHER's screenwriter hasn't been picked up. They want to use bankable, familiar stars. I know NEM didn't do well, but DVD sales and pay-per-view have probably been good, and they don't want their cash cow to just disappear. I'm guessing they want to use TNG cast until they're just too old to do anymore.

I bet they'll use TREK 11 to spinoff a Riker series. Someone here said it earlier, and it's a great idea. It's familiar, it's in the 24th Century so continuity wouldn't be a *huge* problem, and everyone likes Riker.

I'm betting there will be a new TNG movie in 2008.

Q anyone? Borg? Romulans?

Here we have two seemingly conflicting scenarios:

and

It's still too soon to make any real conclusions here, but it does sound promising that TPTB are not letting their cash cow lay fallow for too long. It does seem, based on Stewarts' comments, that the suits do, in fact, highly value Star Trek, and will bring it back. Not that I ever doubted that it wouldn't be back.

I'm sure that Paramount is probably in the 'Testing the Waters" stage of development... this early in the game, they're most likely exploring the viability of moving forward with an established, known quantity (a TNG film) versus an entirely new direction in a pseudo-prequel film ("BEGINNING" would happen between First Contact and ENT, presumably).

Perhaps they're watching the fan boards (like TrekWeb) to see how folks feel about both ideas. It would make sense to me... if done properly, it wouuld constitute free market research and focus group testing.

I'm eagerly awaiting more development on this... watching things unfold over the next months/years will be real fun! :-)

Kira: Well, now that you have another pip on your collar, does that mean I can't disagree with you anymore?

Sisko: No. It just means I'm never wrong.
