Manny Coto Reveals His Plans for ENTERPRISE Now Shelved Fifth Season

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:25, 9 June 2005 / Enterprise

The latest issue of STAR TREK Magazine, just out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Manny Coto, Here are a few excerpts:

Coto revealed that had they got a fifth season, it would have followed directly on from the events in the two-parter episodes "Demons," and "Terra Prime" "If we had gotten a fifth season, it would have been about the real meat of the Federation being founded," he told the magazine. "I would have melded that to a bit of a return to the exploration theme of the show. We would have found new members to join the Federation and watched it come together in a series of episodes that would have spanned the entire season."

Coto said the fans would have the opportunity to see the floating city of Stratos, the Cloud City which was first introduced in THE ORIGINAL SERIES third season episode "The Cloud Minders". "Along with the Mirror Universe episodes, that was something I really wanted to do." he said "I hoped to do it this season, but we just ran out of episodes! It's a pity. That probably would have been the opener to Season Five. It breaks my heart."

About the show's cancellation, he said "STAR TREK has been around for 18 years in this incarnation and it's the same old [format] - we're on the Bridge, here's the captain and the same kind of crew composition and interactions. When something fresher comes along like the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, I can see the urge to tune in and see what else is new out there."

More from Coto can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

The difference between Coto and Bermaga | Report this post to moderator
By: Nuclearmothman (Odo's file, contact) @ 13:55:34 on Jun 10, 2005

Here again we see the major difference between Manny Coto and Berman & Braga. He has a PLAN, a direction he wants to go in, and he knows how to articulate that plan. Before the fourth season he spoke, in specifics, about what he wanted to see and do on Enterprise: the augments, the Vulcans, the Klingon forehead "issue". Berman and Braga spoke in vague generalities, and made promises about being "fresh" and "different," which, it turns out they were neither.

If or when Star Trek returns, I'd love to see Coto's proposed fifth season be the first season of Star Trek: Series 6, set in the first year of the Federation, but NOT on the Enterprise. Set in on Columbia, because Hernandez was a way cooler captain in two episodes than Archer was in four seasons.

You can't help but like a guy like Manny.
He has a class & style that we all wish Berman had.
Even now he talks about missed opportunities & why people would tune out[other than fans just don't know Trek].
It truly is a shame the shows gone now that we have, er had a show runner who delivered.

The History of the Federation | Report this post to moderator

It sounds to me like Manny would like to be the showrunner for the next series... I support that move, but I'd love to see some other competent names attached as well. Think of the possibilities!

I think that non-Berman Star Trek would draw new fans to the show. But Star Trek needs time for the fans to simmer down from the abysmal treatment the franchise received from the former producers.

Time, it does a franchise good.

I would have loved a fifth season. I also welcome Coto's openness about his sense of direction for the show. Doing more for the characters, digging deeper into the founding of the Federation. The city of Stratos sounds very exotic. Of course its just words but season 4 really did "realise" a lot of potential and season 5 definitely had promise...

I also agree with Coto's comments on "the same old format". Well, its a good format, just old. I wish for more variation. There are a lot of repetition in Star Trek. I certainly like things that are familiar. Being a Trekker, its like a warm handshake between me and the show. But it also explains why its not "top priority TV" for the casual viewer... Star Trek is nolonger as new and fresh. People like "news". They watch the news, they read the news. But Star Trek is not new. I guess that's a natural development after 18 years ... and we ought to be grateful that Star Trek holds onto many of the good things, rather than pick up too many bad things. But its time for a change somehow...
