Jolene Blalock Criticizes ENTERPRISE Series Finale, Touched by the Fans Support

Features

By GustavoLeao / 09:30, 6 March 2005 / Enterprise

The Toronto Star website just posted an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE star Jolene Blalock, in which she criticizes the final episode, titled "These Are The Voyages", and talks about the fan campaigns and the current fourth season. Here are a few excerpts :

"It is sad," said Blalock about the show's cancellation "I think most of us here are still in active denial. But you've got to know, going in, that these last few days are going to be highly emotional."

She wonders how the show opened with 13 million viewers and "somehow managed to drive 11 million of them away".

She praised the writing in the fourth season "[Season 4] was a treat, a joy to do." she told Toronto Star journalist Robert Salem "It was an unexpected surprise to have the scripts that we did (this season). And I am grateful and thankful for that. It was fun to come to work again. And it was certainly much better than spending another season doing what we had been doing. It said a lot about the potential of the show."

When asked about the series finale, she said "[awkward silence]...I don't know where to begin with that one. The final episode is ... appalling."

Jolene feels sorry for the fans and praised the fan campaigns to save the show "I really am touched by their outpour of support, and their display of passion for the show. I was sort of caught off-guard. I didn't know that they were so adamant. But, you know, they really aren't saying anything new. They're just saying it louder."

About her upcoming unemployment, she revealed "I'm just coming from an audition right, and I'm very excited about it. I love auditioning, the entire process, going out and meeting people in the industry. It's been four years since I've been out pounding the pavement, and I miss it. It's a place of the unknown, and a place of infinite possibilities. And I like that."

The full interview can be found here. Thanks to The Great Link for the tip.

Man (shakameker), your comment proves beyond any doubt that you have little idea what good acting is. And on top of that, you're a dirty little something - what kind of language is that?!!! If you don't agree with her or you don't like her and her acting, you should explain yourself rather than express your frustration in the way you did. You.....!!!

You guys... All you see is her looks? Yes, no question about that - she has it all. But more than that, she plays her role VERY WELL, don't you think? I mean, if you compare the Vulcan characters in each of the ST shows, her performance has what it takes to make it real. Personally I think the show needs her. As for her comments, isn't it her right to speak, to have an opinion? I mean, she is part of it, isn't she?

I dont understand why you all hate her so much. She is a goddamn hottie and she speaks the truth. She is dead on about the fact this season is better then the rest. Cut her some freakin slack. I doubt I could have watched all those crappy eps without her hot ass at least in them.

...that both Beltran and Blalock, both of whom start with "B" in their last names, bash Rick Berman cos he sucks... and both play(ed) the roles of first officers on a STAR TREK series which Berman is running?

There's GOTTA be a mathematical theorem behind this or something - this is too freaky.

Trek Fans Are Idiots | Report this post to moderator

Have you noticed how the fans bash Star Trek for its bad writing, but the moment an actor like Blalock or Beltran say the same thing, the fans start bashing the actors? I'm glad Jolene speaks her mind. Too bad the idiots at Paramount don't listen to what she and the fans say.

Now we know it is going to suck, what particular plot point can you come up with to make sure it will suck beyond all compare. Everyone come up with one line to put something in the finale to make it suck.

Here is mine:

One of the best things about the cancellation of ENT is that Jolene will fall off the face of the planet and fans of Trek don't have to listen to this idiot. I wish they could just finish it now and that way fans don't have to listen to this nutjob!

Quote"It is sad," said Blalock about the show's cancellation "I think most of us here are still in active denial. But you've got to know, going in, that these last few days are going to be highly emotional."

A few months ago she was upset with the show. Almost begging to be fired. Now she is upset? I guess she realized the "paychecks" are going to be stopping.

Quote:"She wonders how the show opened with 13 million viewers and "somehow managed to drive 11 million of them away".

It is funny that she puts it that way. 11 million fans did just say "fuck off and fuck this crap!" But to answer her question: lousy writing S1-S3 and her BAD acting didn't help!

Quote:"She praised the writing in the fourth season "[Season 4] was a treat, a joy to do." she told the Toronto Sun "It was an unexpected surprise to have the scripts that we did (this season).

Since the show is over and with all her "lip" these past few months. Why doesn't she put her money where her big mouth is and just say it "The scripts by B&B in the beginning were shit!" Come on Jolene go get a set of balls and say it!

Quote:"And I am grateful and thankful for that. It was fun to come to work again.

When was it fun in the first place? When did it stop being fun?

Quote:"And it was certainly much better than spending another season doing what we had been doing. It said a lot about the potential of the show."

Again Jolene have the balls to say it "The show sucked because of B&B, UPN and Paramounts lack of interest in it!

Quote:"When asked about the series finale, she said "[awkward silence]...I don't know where to begin with that one. The final episode is ... appalling."

hahahaha this is the first cast member to back what everyone on here has been saying "It is going suck!" Valentine? What the hell is that senile old man Berman talking about?

Quote:"I really am touched by their outpour of support, and their display of passion for the show.

Touched huh? Well don't charge $50K for a convention appearence with only 2hrs worth of signing. Again, Jolene is ALL talk and no action!

Quote:"I'm just coming from an audition right, and I'm very excited about it. I love auditioning, the entire process, going out and meeting people in the industry. It's been four years since I've been out pounding the pavement, and I miss it.

You miss being unemployed? Miss having to pound the payment day after day looking for acting work? What kind of nonsense is this? My god is she ever stupid!

BUT don't worry Jolene she will soon have her wish on being on the payment again. And with her record for being a "big mouth" work will be even harder to find!

Quote:"It's a place of the unknown, and a place of infinite possibilities. And I like that.

It is called "falling off the face of the planet"! She much like the rest of previous cast members will be gone.

Blalock always critical of Berman | Report this post to moderator
By: Capricorn Two (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:20:38 on Mar 06, 2005

One thing Jolene Blalock has been is critical of Rick Berman -- and thank God. Despite being a Hollywood no-no for criticizing anyone (it is a small community, after all) but when wrong is wrong, someone has to say something....and she has never been shy on the criticism.

I recalled a previous statement she made of Berman (I'm sure there were others) posted on Trekweb...

Here's one from November 2004:

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE actress Jolene Blalock has strong words about her character and the hierarchy of her show in the new issue of the UK's SFX Magazine. Blalock says she was extremely unhappy with much of her character's direction in season three.

"You can't substitute tits and ass for good storytelling," she says bluntly. "You can have both, but you can't substitute one for the other, because the audience is not stupid. You can't just throw in frivolous, uncharacteristic... well, bull and think it's gonna help the ratings!"

The magazine characterizes her feelings about a potential future for show as decidedly cold and asked her why a change like elevating Manny Coto to head of the writing staff wasn't done earlier. Blalock is not kind.

"You have this head guy who's some kind of ancient old croaker with no concept of the real world outside, with his fine wine and his, er, crumpets. And what are ya gonna tell them? 'Give it up'? 'Go home, be with your wife, go play golf'? No - then ya got no job! A powerful job is your identity. Give that up, and who are you? What the hell are you gonna do with all that time? You can't tell people what to do anymore!"

To all those people who criticised some of us for bashing an episode we hadn't seen yet based just on what we heard:

Somehow I feel vindicated now.

The finale is going to suck big time, and will be the biggest glaring indication of what is wrong with Star Trek. After a pretty good season thanks to Manny Coto, we'll be able to put a Coto episode and a brand new Braga & Berman episode back to back (since that's the way they're being aired) and compare the two. Berman is the problem with Star Trek, and in all of Blalock's interviews, if you read between the lines, that seems to be what she's saying as well. It seems to be the common belief among many people as shown by that other article that's posted in this thread. How Paramount is going to justify keeping Berman in charge of the film and TV side of Star Trek is going to be something to see. I don't think they will be able to, and Berman is going to be gone. We'll just have to wait and see on that one I guess.

Blalock calls ENT finale "appalling" | Report this post to moderator
By: TRexx (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:17:50 on Mar 06, 2005 | Edit History (2)

Ha, Gustavo, you just barely beat me to posting an article about this! Well, I may as well post it anyway, as it contains all comments from Blalock...

------

"Yesterday (March 5th) was her 30th birthday, but the celebration was likely somewhat muted... because yesterday was also Jolene Blalock's last day in outer space," reports Rob Salem for The Toronto Star.

"It is sad," said Blalock. "I think most of us here are still in active denial. But you've got to know, going in, that these last few days are going to be highly emotional."

Bjo Trimble, whom Salem describes as "the mother of all Trekkies," is on record as one of ENTERPRISE's earliest and harshest critics. "Get someone who knows TREK to write the scripts," Bjo grumbled. "Get someone who knows TREK to direct... but do you think Paramount has the good sense to see this? Nah!"

"Truth be told, not even the Trekkies have been particularly enthusiastic about ENTERPRISE," notes Salem.

"I don't think you can just throw anything out there and expect people to swallow it," nods Blalock. "There is TREK lore and TREK history to be followed and adhered to." The outspoken actress hasn't been shy about criticizing her own show. "I mean, we started out with 13 million viewers on the pilot, and we somehow managed to drive 11 million of them away."

Season four of ENTERPRISE has used a lot of the retro continuity that some fans can't get enough of. "That was a treat, a joy to do," Blalock bubbles. "It was an unexpected surprise to have the scripts that we did (this season). And I am grateful and thankful for that. It was fun to come to work again. And it was certainly much better than spending another season doing what we had been doing. It said a lot about the potential of the show."

Salem notes an awkward silence from Blalock when the subject of the final episode is broached. "I don't know where to begin with that one," she finally stammers. "The final episode is... appalling."

About the fans, Jolene says, "I really am touched by their outpour of support, and their display of passion for the show. I was sort of caught off-guard. I didn't know that they were so adamant."

"But, you know, they really aren't saying anything new. They're just saying it louder."

Trekker support for the Save Enterprise and TrekUnited campaigns has been paltry. "The turnout for the Los Angeles rally was a mere fraction of the number of fans who will routinely line up for hours for an autograph from any anonymous alien actor at even the smallest STAR TREK convention," notes Salem. "But don't cry for Jolene Blalock — for her, unemployment is likely to be a very temporary situation."

"I'm just coming from an audition right now," Blalock reveals, "and I'm very excited about it. I love auditioning, the entire process, going out and meeting people in the industry. It's been four years since I've been out pounding the pavement, and I miss it. It's a place of the unknown, and a place of infinite possibilities. And I like that."

Blalock got her earliest on-camera work in Toronto, Canada. While studying comedy improvisation at Second City, she co-hosted a sports network show, THE BIG SPIKE, with the late Dan Gallagher. "I was dating my husband (Michael Rapino), who lived there at the time, and I would spend my summers there. I loved Toronto. I had a great time there."

Thanks to a disguise of Vulcan wig and ears, she has no fear of being typecast. "I've been blessed. I've been working incognito. No one really knows what I actually look like."

Although Blalock doesn't expect STAR TREK ties to affect her future acting career, she readily admits that, just in case, "I am going to keep the ears."

The complete article, which more broadly covers fan support of their favorite SF&F TV shows, including BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, can be read in the Sunday (March 6th) issue of The Toronto Star.

i value jolene's opinion...and you know what..why dont the actors have a say in the finale? they should they are the ones making the stories happen..sure berman, braga et al are the writers/producers whatever but folks keep in mind the actors are the ones that fans reach out to. The next series they need to bring back Ron Moore, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Ira and Rene, Jeri Taylor and the crew involved with TNG, DS9 and VOY. Obviously something was right with that writing staff, personally a break will do great because I think the writers are burnt out on original stuff...but Manny Coto has definitely done an awesome job with this season. I sure wish 2 and 3 were like this season....its a disappointment that the show is cancelled...but what can we do? We protest, but $$$ talks. I hope TrekNation is successful. They should use that money to have a new team in and not the current team...keep Coto though. Just my thoughts.

My half-optimistic attitude that we don't know enough to say it will suck yet has now left. Sometimes she is a little nutty and spacey (although during George Noory she came off fairly well thought), but I have never disagreed with what she has said about the quality of the show in the past.
