William Shatner Launches INVASION IOWA in 'Kirk's Birthplace, Site of Indy Film Shoot

By Steve Krutzler / 12:16, 22 September 2004 / People

William Shatner was fresh off his Emmy win yesterday when he arrived in Riverside, Iowa, to announce to the town's 930 residents that he'll be spending the next ten days shooting an independent film project. According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, the STAR TREK stalwart arrived in a limo and addressed the residents of the self-proclaimed birthplace of 'James T. Kirk', saying the location was chosen to give his project a "small-town" atmosphere and to honor the fictional birthplace of his famous character.

Tentatively titled INVASION IOWA, the film is being produced by independent production company Glacier Point Productions and according to the film's publicist, will unload nearly $1 million into the local economy. The film is co-written by Shatner's TREK co-star Leonard Nimoy, and Shatner told the crowd the project "is my passion. I have had this movie on executive desks for a long time."

Production crew from Los Angeles as well as locals will help shoot for the project through September 30th, and seven local actors have been cast in speaking roles in the film, which has yet to secure a distribution channel. The overall budget is $4 million, and the publicist promises that another big-name celebrity (who is only referred to as "Sean") will also be making a trek to Riverside during the shoot. Meanwhile, Priceline.com is shooting a documentary on the film's production to be released on DVD.

The film will shoot in at least three locations in Riverside, and all the details are available in this article.

Shatner's Emmy on Parade | Report this post to moderator

Am I the only one who thought it odd that as Shatner disembarked from his limo in Riverside, that he was followed around by an assistant bearing his Emmy award on a platter? A bit much even for Shatner, me thinks...

This certainly brings up some thoughts as to who this "Sean" is. And there's not many actors named Sean that come to my mind. The only ones I know of are Sean Patrick Flanery ("Young Indiana Jones"), Sean Bean (LOTR), and, of course, Sean Connery. Unless there's another Sean or two that we're missing here...?

Let the speculation begin! :)

But ten days of shooting doesn't sound very long for a film, does it?

Isn't it ironic... | Report this post to moderator

...that here he is, filming something NOT related to "Boston Legal", yet there was all this hullaboo early on about whether ABC would let Shatner "appear" in ENT and stuff about "Boston Legal's" supposed busy schedule among other things.

Yet.... ;-)

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998

"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701
