CNN reports this morning that award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith has passed away at the age of 75. Goldsmith had been battling cancer.

Goldsmith was one of the most influential artists to be involved in the STAR TREK franchise, beginning with his score for STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE in 1979. Goldsmith received one of his 17 Academy Award nominations for that score, which became one of the most famous science fiction theme. Goldsmith later adapted it for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.

Goldsmith had began his career in the 1950s with composing for series like GUNSMOKE and HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, which featured several scripts from future STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry, and WAGON TRAIN. His career spanned westerns, war movies, and sci-fi movies from PATTON (1970) to THE PLANET OF THE APES (1968) to CHINATOWN (1974) to ALIEN (1979).

Goldsmith composed the scores for four other STAR TREK feature films, including THE FINAL FRONTIER, FIRST CONTACT, INSURRECTION, and most recently STAR TREK: NEMESIS in 2002. He created the majestic STAR TREK: VOYAGER main title theme, for which he won an Emmy Award in 1995. The composer also contributed the music for the new BORG INVASION 4-D at the STAR TREK Experience in Las Vegas.

Goldsmith was nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, 3 Saturn Awards, 4 Emmys and 9 Golden Globes.

Read much more about Goldsmith's career at CNN. There is a list of his credits here. There is more about Goldsmith's career at STAR TREK Soundtracks.

Update: The official STAR TREK web site has posted reactions from Rick Berman and David C. Fein to Goldsmith's passing.

Goldsmith Tribute | Report this post to moderator

I just also wanted to add my thoughts on Mr. Goldsmith's passing as well. When you think of STAR TREK music, only a few really big names come to mind, and one of them is Jerry Goldsmith. His beautiful score for TMP set the tone for so much of the TREK music to come in the 80's, 90's, and this decade.

No matter what musical score you listen to, whether it's one of the TREK films, THE MUMMY, AIR FORCE ONE, SUPERGIRL, to name but just a few off the top of my head, Goldsmith had his finger on the pulse of music, rivalling that of John Williams or John Barry. Even in the whole controversy of STAR TREK: NEMESIS, when some people argued for a fresh musical approach to the film or for Hans Zimmer to score the film, Jerry Goldsmith maintained the musical consistency of the series with musical cues that were at times big and adventurous, at other times simple and poignant, but altogether completely beautiful.

And now his baton is silent way too soon. He may be gone now, but his music will live forever in our hearts and in the CDs, tapes, and albums in our collections.

For those of you in the Los Angeles area, Film Score Monthly's web site is reporting that a public memorial service for Mr. Goldsmith will be at 2:00 p.m. today in Los Angeles at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 Centinela Avenue.

TrekWeb will be doing a special tribute piece to the legacy of Jerry Goldsmith in the coming days, with reflections from some very special contributors, so be on the lookout for it.

I came online today to find the news that Jerry Goldsmith had passed. Saying that I am completly gutted is an understatment. He was a man who helped define the standard of modern film music.

I remember listening to his commentary on Star Trek The Motion picture and thinking how very aware he was of the nature of the music industry in Hollywood.

I find myself struggling to think of things to say although I feel I need to say something, it's almost as if I have lost something myself.

I use to listen to Jerrys' soundtracks on my paper route everyday and for years they made the mind-bendingly dull task of posting newpapers barable. In fact he was one of the few composers who have inspired me to take up composition myself and for that I will be forever grateful.

The Goldsmith family have lost a treasured father, grandfather and husband and the world has lost a great creative mind. But we will always have his music and those parts of him that brought such joy to our lives.

Thinking of you.

This really is too bad....he was one of my favorite composers out there, and not just including Trek. I especially like his scores to TMP and STFC, but they're all pretty good.

Rest in peace; Trek has definetly lost part of it's legacy with this.

Sad news. This man posseed huge talent, and composed my personal favorite film score of all time, STTMP. That soundtrack is haunting, melodic, emotional, grand and inspiring.

This is a HUGE, huge loss!!! | Report this post to moderator

Words cannot describe how I feel today...this is like losing an original Trek cast member to me. Jerry Goldsmith is someone whose work I grew up with. In fact, in 1976 I was given my first soundtrack as a Christmas present and it was Jerry's soundtrack to Logan's Run. I was immediately hooked and have been a fan of Jerry's compositions ever since.

I have been a collector and afficianado of film music for many many years and Jerry Goldsmith is my absolute favorite film composer.

In my opinion, he was head and shoulders above his peers in talent. He will be missed by his fans and by the film industry. Only John Williams could even begin to hope of filling this void as the greatest maestro in film.

My prayers are with Jerry and his family at this time.

Godspeed, Maestro Goldsmith...your legacy will outlive us all! Nevertheless, you will be missed and without your talent, the film industry will never be the same.

A great loss. He was probably our greatest score composer. I understand over 200. He did Hoosiers & Rudy, two wonderful tear jerking themes...the Twilight Zone Movie, all four stories. So many. He'll be missed, indeed.

I've just got home from work having listened to the fantastic Star Trek: First Contact score all the way home!!

What a loss, didn't know he had cancer, so a bit shocked!!! Glad he went on composing great music til the end (Scorpion anyone?). Not forgetting the breath taking Voyager score!!

A great loss to the world of cinema and the Star Trek franchise.

Please release the score for the Borg Invasion 4-D and buy all rights to The Motion Picture theme song. We must allow this great composer to be recognized when this song is heard!
Jerry Goldsmith will be heard for centuries to come.

A man who will live beyond the 24th Century... | Report this post to moderator

I have loved Jerry Goldsmith's scores for years. We all knew that this day would come soon. I am saddened to hear that the day has come to no longer enjoy a new score from him. From Alien, to Star Trek, to The Haunting, and The Mummy...I have always enjoyed his strong emotion into film. I will deeply miss this great composer of our era. I deeply regret that I did not have the opportunity to hear or meet him in person.
In the Trek universe, I think it will only be fitting to purchase the rights to the ultimate "theme" song in Trek history and allow Joel Goldsmith to score all the future films.
Jerry, you will always have a place in my heart, emotion, and my home theater. Thank you for the best experiences ever.

Fantastic musician. He's contributed so much to television and movies; stuff like Room 222, Barnaby Jones, Patton, Star Trek, he did one used once on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, plus countless others mentioned here. I can remember talking to friends about going to movie, if we were on the fence, a Goldsmith score could be the deciding factor. I will miss this guy's stuff.

Wow. I am so sorry to hear this. This man has had such an influence on modern film, large-scale orchestral scores and he will be sorely missed, cut down in his prime considering that traditionally, composers and conductors alike have tended to be quite long-lived.

Over the past couple years, Trek has lost some greats who worked behind the scenes and it's sad to see them go... although they now join the Great Bird of the Galaxy...

RIP...

What a loss | Report this post to moderator
By: Plato's Stepchild (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:47:30 on Jul 22, 2004

What an absolute loss to the franchise and to the world. Goldsmith produced some of the BEST of the star trek scores.

Insurrection is definately my favorite. I still get chills whenever I hear "New Sight." And the main theme has an incredible ability to make me feel at peace. It definitely feet the Ba'ku village well.

FC and TFF also were some of the best of his work. In fact, the soundtrack is probably the most redeeming quality of TFF.

And I am about 75% sure he wrote the theme to Inner Light...Is that correct? If it is, that is the most engaging and emotional piece of music in trek.

Rest in peace Mr. Goldsmith, you will certainly be missed.

Jerry Goldsmith was, by far, one the greatest composers in television and motion picture history. John Williams' work is more familiar to the general public but for film lovers and genre fans his work by far surpasses Williams.

Among his best scores:

- Planet of the Apes

- The Omen

- Star Trek: The Motion Picture

- Alien

His scores for "Planet of the Apes" and "The Omen" have influenced film scores to this day.

He'll be missed.
