Rick Berman: Confident in UPN Pickup, Fourth Season Could be "As Different" as S3

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 13:08, 8 May 2004 / Enterprise

Speaking in the latest issue of the STAR TREK Communicator, ENTERPRISE executive producer Rick Berman says despite rumors of cancellation or a different network, he is confident that UPN will once again re-up the fifth STAR TREK series.

"I am confident [...] that we are going to get a season 4 from UPN," Berman told the mag several weeks ago, according to excerpts available at TrekToday. "I would think that, just for the general sense of stability, our primary goal is to keep the show going on UPN. If it is not picked up on UPN and it could be picked up elsewhere, that would be a terrific thing as well."

Any prospective fourth season of the show would not merely pickup where this year's finale, "Zero Hour," is scheduled to leave off on May 26th.

"My feeling is that ENTERPRISE will probably not go back to the first and second season job of simple exploration of space," he says. "I think there will be missions, but not missions that are anywhere as lengthy as what we have done with this 25-episode Xindi arc. I think that we will probably be dealing more with smaller arcs, maybe arcs of three, four or five shows. We see season four being as different from season three as season three was from season two."

I just cannot see them cancelling Enterprise now. With Smackdown falling a bit in popularity, it just does not make sense for UPN not to pick up their best show, receiving popular and critical support lately, with the highest ratings (for UPN), and their parent company's prized franchise.

Now season five, that is a different story. And I could see that someone wise might still want to bring in Behr to manage the writing, leaving Berman to handle the business end.

Given the way some things have been played fast and loose with continuity over the past 3 years, I am not so sure that Braga will wrap it up in a way without some magic reset, and still address the historical problems. Behr stands a better chance of fixing some of the problems, while creating compelling television.

This guy is in charge of Trek and he doesn't know by now if ENT is getting renewed. Is this guy that stupid? The guy who runs the show doesn't know anything. How SAD is that? I guess he doesn't know, he missed the memo because he is too busy working on another non-trek sci-fi series.

Who else would pick up ENT? WB? NBC? ABC? CBS? FOX? No one will want it. There is no money to be made in it. They are expensive episodes to make and they have had to lower the running time just to get more advertisers to buy the show. The fact that the man in charge of Trek doesn't know anything about the fate of ENT is RIDICULOUS. This just shows you how incompetent Berman is. I think the studio has already made its decision and on May 20th will announce that ENT is cancelled. It has been listed on several Canadian stations already that ENT has been cancelled and will not be back. They are just keeping everything up in the air to make the advertisers not pull out the remaining ads. Who would want to keep support a show that has bad ratings and is going to be cancelled.

On May 20th if they announce the cancellation of ENT. You will no doubt see Berman put a spin of "we did a great show"....."those damn fans ruined it". Much like he did for Nemesis. Good job pissing off the fans. Such a brillant guy!! hahaha

Mini Arcs sound good, so long as they are good stories, otherwise we could watch 4 episodes of one bad idea, I'd just tune out until its over.

There still the problem with dull characters, its getting better, but something is still missing.

Smaller Arcs with good writing required!! | Report this post to moderator
By: Picardd (Odo's file, contact) @ 17:01:37 on May 08, 2004

I whole heartedly agree, as a huge Trek fan especially DS9, I love episode arcs. Through the entire 3 seasons of Enterprise I have been watching and waiting for interesting arcs to be presented. but never posting myself now is the time to post I say!

I do have to say that Seasons 1 and 2 had their high points but nothing like Season 3 has been so far. My greatest hope though is that B&B have finally pulled their heads out and realized the need for great writing. Arcs won't do much without great stories to be told. Let's hope that the ideals of Trek are somehow remembered. To search out new worlds and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. And I would add the thoughts "to tell compelling and interesting stories which show humanities ability to find strength in adversity and come out better in the end."

I like the idea of smaller arcs. That would seem to be an interesting way to give a more detailed version of the "explore a new planet each week" concept.

The Alpha Quadrant has changed. The Federation is collapsing. Its only hope lies with a ship named Enterprise and an unprecedented mission beyond our galaxy.
