Fast National Ratings: ENT's Return Does Little "Damage" to Competition

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 11:59, 22 April 2004 / Enterprise

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE kicked off the final six new episodes of its third season last night on UPN, but the show continues to register a small blip on the ratings radar. According to Zap2it, which published the Fast National Ratings for the evening, "Damage" scored a 2.2/4.

This is squarely in line with recent episodes such as "Hatchery," which scored an identical Fast National. The previous new episode, "Azati Prime," earned a 2.6/4 in early March, four-tenths of a point higher than last night's debut. The Fast Nationals closely track the final ratings and the number indicates that roughly 2.2% of American television households were tuned into ENTERPRISE last night, 4% of the households watching television at the time.

The WB's SMALLVILLE took the fifth-place spot with a 2.8/5, leaving UPN in sixth overall with an average of 2.1/3. WB averaged 2.7/4.

I agree that ENT has its problems, but what about when your local UPN affiliate decides to pre-empt the show you waited 6 weeks to see, and puts on some stupid basketball game instead?

Now I have to wait until Saturday to see the new ep., and what sucks is that from what I've seen the ratings from Wed. night are all that really counts.

FYI: I live in South Florida and the basketball game had the Miami Heat playing, so conceiveably it was pre-empted for all of south Florida. I definitely know ENT wasn't on in Broward and Palm Beach (and Miami is Dade county, so they probably had it on there too) so you are talking about a lot of people right there. Last time I looked/heard there were more than 10 million people in Broward county alone.

Do the math people, the ratings slump isn't solely due to the writing.

I thought Enterprise switched to 9 o'clock! I set my VCR and I missed it! What's going on? Did I miss something here??

So much time has been since a new episode that we're all a little rusty. But I see whoever makes the bad puns for the headlines kept in practice :)

Anyway, Steve--check out Mediaweek. The overnight is now listed. 3.1.

It's really a tough call as to whether the show will be back. Reports say yes, but there is no logical justification for the show's return.

Most people will agree that the show is better than last year. I'm one of the show's biggest critics and even I will admit that.

But the ratings are down. And to fall from what was already a low point makes it tough to justify the show's existence.

Put yourself in Paramount's position--would YOU keep the show on the air? Why?

Personally, I see Enterprise as a very good forum for the return of Kirk. We have been talking about it on Trekweb, and it has been a major topic here over the last month. For that to happen though, there must be a 4th season.

They really need to end the Xindi storyline. While it may have been better than before creatively, it didn't work for viewers.
