ENT Gets "Harbinger" of Hope as Overnights, Fast Nationals Track Up; Plus T'Pol's Butt Censored?

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 11:21, 12 February 2004 / Enterprise

The first-run presentation of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE's "Harbinger" registered upticks in the show's overnight and fast national ratings last night. Although we're well into February, the Sweeps period didn't begin until after last week's "Stratagem," making "Harbinger" the first Sweeps episode of the year.

According to Mediaweek, the episode scored a 3.6/5 overnight rating, up two tenths of a point from last week's 3.4/5 (story). This improvement puts "Harbinger" on top of the 2004 pile and even with last October's "Exile" as far as overnight ratings go. Marc Berman still puts ENTERPRISE in his "loser's" column this week, however. Mediaweek also published the Adults 18-49 demographic, 1.5/4.

Over at Zap2it, the fast national data shows an increase as well. With a 2.5/4, "Harbinger" could best everything else so far this year if the estimate is accurate. "Carpenter Street" had a 2.3, "Chosen Realm" a 2.4, "Proving Ground" a 2.25, and "Stratagem" a 2.4" in the fast national or final tabulations.

ENTERPRISE was again sixth in its timeslot, behind SMALLVILLE in both figures. For the full round-ups, check out Mediaweek and Zap2it.

In related news, TrekWeb readers have sent in reports suggesting that a nude scene in last night's episode may have been edited in part. Viewers from Canada report a longer reveal of Jolene Blalock's naked backside than a viewer in Boston, who wrote in with the report. UPN is owned by CBS, emboriled in a controversy over the recent Super Bowl halftime show. The FCC's investigation into obscenity on television has spooked many networks into editing programming.

Here's the uncensored view from Canada: T'Pol's naked butt (large vidcap)

I'm certain that's a body double; Jolene Blalock has muscular shoulders.

Censored? | Report this post to moderator
By: Jadzia-Dax (Odo's file, contact) @ 12:27:18 on Feb 12, 2004

Yes it was censored. I know that the promo last week for ENT "Harbinger" showed more of the nude rear shot per my tape. But then the same promo offered for download from startrek.com, ended up with a pixelized blur at the bottom. And the scene was cut off rather quickly just as she dropped her robe in the actual showing, at least in my market.

All of this is just silly and essentially meaningless for this show and in fact, the act itself was confirmed to be meaningless within the context of the plot.

--------

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998

Outer Space. The last frontier.

These are the trips of the Star Trek Enterprise.

Its 5-year plan...

Calls for us to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations.

To boldly fly where no man has gone in space.

"Stratagem" Finals | Report this post to moderator

It's worth noting that the final viewership for last weeks "Stratagem" ended up with 4.08 million viewers according to Variety - Much higher than the overnights predicted.

Hopefully in conjunction with the decent advertising and T'Pol's butt, Harbinger might be able to build on this somewhat when the finals come out.

My theory on ENT ratings | Report this post to moderator
By: Darth Malak (Odo's file, contact) @ 11:48:27 on Feb 12, 2004

The sexed up episodes get a slight short-term boost in ratings, but long-term these episodes piss off more people than they please. Expect another slow drop off in ratings over the rest of the season. Then we can fire these a-holes who don't know how to write for an adult audience.
