Break Out the Saurian Brandy, TREK Scribe Joe Menosky Toasts ANONYMOUS REX Greenlight

Former STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and STAR TREK: VOYAGER writer/producer Joe Menosky becomes the latest TREK vet to go to work for the Sci-Fi Channel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable channel has green-lighted Menosky's two-hour movie adaptation ANONYMOUS REX, for production beginning in March. REX is based based on author Eric Garcia's comedic mystery novels in which dinosaurs have survived and evolved to the present day and masquerade behind latex human costumes. The protagonist, Vincent Rubio, is a "high-tech private investigator" and just one of many human-sized dinos in disguise.

REX has been in development for several years and Sci-Fi says the movie will function as a backdoor pilot, meaning it could be picked up for series if garnering sufficient ratings. Ronald D. Moore's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was recently given a six-episode committment. The pilot will involve computer animation and animatronics that Sci-Fi vice president of programming says are doable with today's technology.

"It feels like this is the time for this concept to come to fruition. I think the technology is really in the right place, and we can execute the dinosaurs and the fantasy elements in the right way for the money."

Menosky co-wrote the saurian-centric VOYAGER third season episode "Distant Origin" with Brannon Braga. Most recently, Menosky contributed several scripts to Michael Piller's THE DEAD ZONE.

I've read one of the books in the series. I thought it was a creative idea, but some of the language and style wasn't quite right. I'd definitely watch the TV series, though, just to see how they handle the suits.
