The
Ship - Week of Oct. 7th - Oct. 11th
Dramatic
Overview: This was definately the BEST episode yet of
both series' seasons combined! There was great suspense,
beautiful character drama, and excellent future implications for
the Federation!
Firstly, my local
station screwed up the beginning, and I didn't see the
before-theme-song part. If anyone can tell me how it started,
please mail me. Now, from the the get-go, this episode
had character driven suspense written all over it. From the time
they entered the ship, and searched it mysteriously, the phrase,
to go where no one has gone before, resonted through
my mind. It was excellent!
When the Jem'Hadar
attacked the runabout, it was great! Then the awesome surface
scene with the 'Hadar soldiers chasing the crew into the ship,
and hitting Munyez brought a sense of suspense we havn't
experienced for a long time. I found the chemistry between
O'Brien and Munyez captivating. O'Brien's compassion and sense of
responsibility was admiralble.
When the goregeous
Horta had Sisko out to talk, I finally picked my mouth up from
the floor after being shocked by her beauty, and was completely
taken by surprise when the Jem 'Hadar soldier beamed in through
the opening. The lead-in to the commercial kept me on the edge.
It was now that I knew there was something important on the ship.
The continuing
drama with the dying Munyez was handled so beautifully. I really
found it touching. I loved Worf's opinion of Munyez' condition,
and how O'Brien dealt with him. It was very powerful!
When the ship
couldn't get out on it's own, I pretty much thought the Defiant
was gonna jump in there pounding....but to my surprise, the
character drama and story was enthralling enough that you didn't
need any action of the nature.
The other twist
that completely took me by surprise was the discovery that the
special thing on the ship was a changling! This was great!
Watching it die, and then seeing the woman beam on board and how
Sisko said he would have given up the Founder if he had known. It
was just so powerful!
Then, in true Trek
fashion, Sisko had to deal with the implications of his mission,
and how many people died. This was fantastic! I love how he
related it to a specific principle that he had been taught at the
academy. This was just great!
This second
episode truly had as well an effect as did last season's second,
The Visitor. A true character driven, suspensful,
drama. True Trek.
The only gripe I
have is the apparaent absence of this supposed, different
style that the first ten episodes of DS9 were supposed to
be shot in. Oh well. I find it amazing however, that the writers
on DS9 are consistently better than those on Voyager- even when
Voyager seems to have a better setting for originality.
Next week looks
like the token, Quark Episode, but it looks okay.
