Apocalypse Rising Airdate: Week of Sept. 30th - Oct. 5th
Review: As the fifth
season of DS9 begins, this premiere lived up to it's trailer -
but that's it. On the whole, it was a good episode, however,
there were many things that just took away from the realism.
The banter between
Worf, Kira, and O'Brien was refreshing, yet seemed somewhat
forced (especially with Worf). As the show opens, and the
runabout is safely returned to the station, some tension arises
when Sisko says that the war isn't going very well, and that they
[the Klingons] are throwing everything they have at them [the
Feds]. This was a great prelude on the whole.
I was dissapointed
to discover that the rumors about the opening credits, scenes,
and music being changed were false, yet the old scenes still fit
well. One of the highlights of this program was Odo's monologue
on digestion, giving the distinct impression that he is becoming
a drunkard. I find this character change inviting, and a great
facet to explore during the season (unless he's a changling,
which I think he is). I like how Odo caught himself about to
refer to solids as 'them,' and rather changed his choice of word
to 'we.'
It was a little
mystifying that they {TPTB} chose not to clue us into the reason
DuKat has a Klingon Bird of Prey. (Oct.10- I have just been
informed by a TrekWeb visitor, that DuKat got the B.O.P. in the
4th season episode, Return To Grace.) I found Sisko's
lame Klingon laugh attempt amusing as he led into the commercial
break after asking DuKat if he'd ever seen a Klingon before.
Worf's attempt to
'Klingonize' the others, seemed natural, as did his rescue of Odo
after he'd dropped the device. The best scene by far however was
when Sisko, enraged at hearing a Klingon describe how he had
killed a SF Captain, beat up the Klingon. I didn't know what he
was going to say, and then Brooks surprised the hell out of me
with his, Brag all you want, but don't get between ME
annnnnnd....the BLOOD WINE! The way it came across was
quite effective.
When it came to
placing the devices, we all knew that Odo would drop his, and
frankly I didn't know how he'd get out of it! Worf came through,
in one of his seemingly less 'forced' scenes.
O'Brien doesn't
make a very good Klingon, as his encounter with the general will
attest to. But he played it well enough.
When Sisko finally
took out the trigger mechanism, I was dying for him to push it,
when they called his name. When Gowron looked him in the eyes, I
thought for sure he WAS the changling, as he didn't recognize
Sisko, but then I smartened up, and as we went into commercial
dying to see Sisko push the trigger---I knew Gowron was not.
In the cell, the
general was only SHOUTING, I'm the changling, with
his cutsie little speech about Gowron's activities.
All and all, I
find it a little hard to believe that even when presented with
such a proven Dominion threat to the Alpha Quad., Gowron would
continue the war. But I'm glad they are continuuing, it's time
for some good Klingon action! (The second best scene, and MOST
surprising by the way, was when I thought DuKat was going to
communicate with the Klingons, and he blew the crap out of them!)
It's still kinda lame that the enemies meet face to face, and the
war continues.
It was obvious
throughout this episode that it should have been two hours. It
seemed kinda forced, and shortened. But it was a good opener for
a season that has a lot of promises in it. (Where's this 'new
style' that the first 10 episodes were supposed to be shot in?)
